I'm curious as to whether these are necessary for cleaning a rifle. What works and what doesn't? I haven't seen any topics on cleaning cradles here so are they even necessary for an AR15?

I cleaned rifles for years w/o a cradle. Now that I've got one, I wouldn't clean a rifle without it. For the AR, get one of those hold open links from Sinclair and a chamber guide. Makes cleaning alot easier. Use a one piece rod.

EIB,

Cleaning cradles are a must have!!!
You can scrub without one,but then it is work and you will have to fuss with keeping the rod straight, and worry about scratching the rifle on the bench etc..

For the AR there is another option that I have found to be BETTER than the Cradle.

A good old fashioned 5" bench vice!!!

Using soft plastic machinists jaw pads,or those sold through Brownells(I do the armorer gig for a living and use several different benches)
Just pop the upper free of the lower, remove the handguards, and chuck the booger in the vice.Close the paded Jaws on the barrel and NOT the upper, and keeping the gas tube clear of getting crushed.

It stays still, wont move,ya can get at it with the chamber tools, swivel it to be more comfy for each stage of the scrubbing, and ya don't have to worry about it getting launched when a tight patch suddenly shows up.

If you have a Colt with that silly screw in forward takedown pin, just let the lower hang there with an empty 10 rnd mag resting against the bench....best use of the Klinton mag yet.

Good luck to ya!

Hmm...Two options. One for the range and one @home. Thx GreenDragon and S-28.

What do you guys think about the Tipton Gun Vise? Will/does it work with stocks other than the standard A2?

EIB,
The tipton looks like several other cleaning vices out there that were primarily designed for conventional rifles.
I sold the dickens out of the Midway vice when I had my store.

I went low tech and made my own from 1x8 lumber.

Padded the shallow radius "V" cuts using USMC dress belt and carpet.

It dosn't clamp the rifle in,but the angle of the "V" cut and the give of the padding puts a lock on the rifle so that it dosn't move unless I'm going to town with the JB and a tight patch.
Cost was about 30 Min,and some scraps.
Just remember to make it so the muzzle sits lower than the breech when in the cradle so the gorp and solvent down run downhill into the action.

Good luck to ya!!

Sinclair makes a cradle which is specific to AR15/10 it folds, and can go to the range it also has a gizmo available which holds two dewey or boretech cleaning rods (patch and brush).  I am very happy with mine.

See it here:

The Tipton style is good. I have the MTM vice, which looks exactly like the Tipton so they are probably made by the same company. They work fine with an AR. The Sinclair gizmo will help keep the upper and lower apart, but I found if you tighten the clamp up nice and tight, the upper and lower will stay apart good enough without the Sinclair gizmo. And it's not like you have to worry about scratching wood on an AR.

I have two (2) RMC-1-30s and one (1) RMC-5-50.

http://www.mtmcase-gard.com/products/shooting/gunm.html
Use all three at the same time all the time.

Besides BoreTech rods, ProShot jags, brushes and patches, Hoppes #9 (piss on being in a hurry with the brutal stuff), Dewey AR-10 and AR-15 bore guides, BreakFree, FP-10, Tetra and a few other items.........well, I rate them as high as any gun vise to hold my $0.09K to +$2K rifles and shotguns safely with the bore tilted downward while attached to a lower or not.
