As I am working on breaking in a new barrel for my new varminter.  Bushmaster's procedure says,

"(brushes, patches, etc.) be pushed from the breech toward the muzzle"

I have read on other sites like the Maryland AR15 Shooters site that you should,

"Always pull the rod (or bore snake or Otis cable) from the Chamber to the Muzzle."

I typically use a rod guide for my cleaning.  Does it really matter if you push or pull the rod through?

To me, as long as you go from breech to muzzle, you're good.  If you can perform a push more smoothly than a pull (?), then push.  To me, a pull is a lot easier and smoother.

I take the upper completely off and have a friend hold it... or if you have a soft vice, that'd work well too.

and remember, "the one with the rifle shoots.  The one without, follows him.  When the one with the rifle gets killed, the one following, picks up the rifle, and shoots"  =)

I use a bore guide and push the rod with patches/brush from chamber to muzzle end, always.

I use the Otis Technology kit.  Cable pulls the patch from breech to muzzle.  I have the #750 kit I use for everything.  Nice compact kit that would be handy for SHTF also I suppose.  Check out the website http://www.otisgun.com/
