I have a brand new Colt 6720 that is giving me what looks like extraction problems.  I cleaned it and lubed it with Slip 2000 EWL, and took it to the range.  I was using Federal LC 2004 5.56 ammo, very first round the gun fails to extract.  I clear it and it failed to extract twice more, for a total of 3 times in 9 rounds.

I then tried a different brand of ammunition - Geco .223, first round, same fail to extract.

The gun fails to extract the case, and the magazine tries to feed the next round, jamming it under the fired but not extracted case.  Once I have the unfired jammed case out of the way, and try to cycle the gun by hand to eject the fired case, it comes right out.

The only thing that I can think of is I failed to clean the chamber upon initial cleaning; when I got home, I looked at it, and it didn't look dirty or oily, but went ahead and cleaned it with a chamber brush anyways.

I did note that there seemed to be some shaving of the case rim where the extractor was gripping the case, more than I usually see.

Any thoughts?

Well, I noticed that the extractor didn't look right, and compared it to a Colt extractor I had sitting around that I got years ago from Specialized Armament.  I think Colt sent me a rifle with a defective extractor; it has no extractor groove!

First thing I would do is swap the extractor and see what happens.  If it works now I'd say you have found the problem.

It looks to me you are not getting a good grip on the rim and the extractor is slipping off.

I'm going to say I think you found the issue . I would go over to the colt industry page and make a post with the pictures and see what they have to say . I would think it would be the quickest way to get a hold of them and get it fixed .

You definitely found the problem and that's good investigating! Unbelievable that Colt sent out a rifle with a defective extractor like that, and also that it wasn't caught during test-firing, indicating another problem in that it must not have been fired before shipping. I'd put an extractor in it and move on. No sense sending it anywhere and going through all that.

I think you found the culprit. I wouldn't even worry about getting a replacement to be honest. Shit happens. Swap the parts yourself and shoot on.

 I would.  It's a $37 defective Colt part.
Of course you can get the part cheaper, especially a non-Colt one, but still...

Thanks for including the photos.  You can clearly see the defect. The part was incorrectly machined without a groove for the cartridge rim to properly engage for extraction.

Thanks guys.  I sent a pic of the two parts off to Colt, but haven't heard anything back yet.  Yes, I would like for them to send me a new part.  Luckily I have a spare and can just swap it out and carry on.

Figures.  I used to carry a pouch of spare parts in my range bag, but didn't this time due to trying to lighten up the load I have to haul around to the range (and not having needed it in a while).

Op,
It appears from you picture(s) of the whole extractor that the original Factory Colt-example has an engraved "A" just in front of the spring/insert-area, is this correct?  Or is an engraved "C"?

Not that it really matters.  If anything, keep your original Factory Colt "gold" extractor-spring and insert as a spare.  Still the best on the market.  Good luck.

"C" marked.  What would an "A" indicate?

Extractor is definitely bad ( looks like the part missed a  machine op) also is the face of the ejector flat or does it appear to have a taper?

Here are a couple pictures, compared to a Bravo Company extractor:  BCM on the left, Colt extractor on the right.

Pic of extractor groove area.  Colt on top, BCM on bottom.  The Colt looks significantly different than the BCM.  I don't know what is normal for a Colt part, but it looks to me like maybe more material was removed than should have been in addition to not putting in the case rim groove?

In your very first picture, I was going to say your extractor looks like it belongs to a different caliber.  Even aside from the missing groove, it is sitting much lower, or closer to center,  than a normal one would.

It kind of makes you wonder what other calibers Colt might possibly be developing if they have parts for it.

After not hearing back from Colt. despite leaving a message and two emails, one with pictures of the problem, after 6 days, I guess I am going to have to escalate the contacts up the food chain a bit.  This doesn't fill me with the warm and fuzzies that Colt is going to going to honor their warranty.

Usually they would require the rifle to make a warranty adjustment. How it works is you call them and they send you a shipping label for the rifle.

Finally heard back from Colt; it appears that they are in a bit of disarray but that things seem to be starting to come together and they are going to send me a new extractor.  (crosses fingers in hope).

Years ago I bought a new Eagle Arms AR, same issue. The problem was my extractor was sticking on the sides where it contacted the bolt. I removed some metal on the sides of the extractor so it could move. Eagle sent me a new extractor no question asked.
