Got a Mag Tactical upper for my light weight rifle project. The rear lug of the upper is slightly out of spec and won't fully seat on the lower.  It appears that some minor filing will fix the problem. The included paperwork says not to grind on the lower.  Any problem with filing on the rear lug, as long as I seal / paint the bare metal?

Since its new, I would suggest you contact Mag Tactical and have them replace it, before you file on anything.

I don't think replacement is an option, they don't have any for sale and they don't answer email.

Have you called them?

I'm trying to avoid sending it back. If it were aluminum I would have filed it down already, I only need a 1/16" or less removed from the side of the lug. I'm just checking due to the exotic metal.

If you get a hold of them let me know. I have a out of spec lower that I would like to trade in.

I will let you know, appears to be a common problem.  What's out of spec on the lower?  My lower appears to be good.

Funny as it sounds, may be that the their uppers fit their lowers without problems.

I'm using a Mag Tactical Lower with the Mag Tactical Upper, so its out of spec.  I tried some colt uppers on the lower with no problem.  The rear receiver lug wasn't machined properly, leaving some extra material near the top of the lug. The extra material hits the side of the lower before it closes all the way.

They use a thixoforming process where the material is injected into a form under high pressure Ina semi liquid/solid state and then allowed to cool.  Their molds/post milling jigs apparently didn't accommodate for cooling shrinkage so they have a lot of slightly out of spec lowers and uppers floating around.  They were also selling "80%" lowers a few months ago, which I think were the out of spec items once they realized there was an issue.

In short, use a properly shaped square edged file to make the correction, mask with blue tape, wipe with as close to 100% acohol as you can find, heat with a blow dryer and spray the filed area with a quality spray finish like Brownells Aluma Hyde II.
