I am somewhat new to this platform so forgive me if I fumble a bit:
So, I built what I consider a quality AR. BCM, Spikes, etc. parts. I am using a standard carbine buffer and stock from PSA (Blackhawk) – including spring.

Here is the issue:

I slap a ten round mag in so I can get the rifle in my lead sled for a zero. I put the charging handle back and it’s like its anemic – it doesn’t properly feed the round into the chamber. I pull it back, lock it, and pull the half fed round out. I have my friend try the mag in his frankengun as well – he fires 8 shots no problem.

I load mine up again, and even using the forward assist it doesn’t feed correctly. So hit the mag on the bottom, and try to charge another round, it goes into battery and fires, but doesn’t pick up the next round. It’s like the system is anemic or weak. It doesn’t feed the first round without encouragement and won’t feed the second.
I get it home, tired, and forget about it. I messed with it a little today and worked the handle and the bolt slams forward like my other rifles.

Any thoughts?

Is your gas tube properly installed? Is it straight inside the upper?
Sounds like the gas key isnt lining up with the gas tube and there
might be a little dragging going when chambering a round.

I checked the gas system, it all seems to be good and level. It was pain to take everything apart lol, but it seems to be all in line.

It it were dragging would it have problems feeding the first round? It seems to slam home without a round  or mag in - just having problems feeding. I don't understand it, I almost want to say its a mag issue but my buddy's gun fed that mag fine. hmm... Also I am trying to research as much as possible but I am starting to get confused.

Okay here is another part that maybe causing this issue...I have not lubed the rifle, I just built it. Could lack of lube cause this?

If I understand what I've read here recently, it sounds like your mag release needs a little more engagement. Maybe one turn or a half turn (flip the button 180) Especially since it fed when you pushed the mag up.

Oil the chamber and see if that helps OR oil the first few rounds, put them in the mag, feed the oiled rounds.

What does it do w/ a different mag?  Which 10 round mag do you have?  Had an issue w/ some 10 rnd flush-fit Thermolds - some of the baseplates were too thick for certain magwells.

Are the magazine feed lips rubbing on the bolt? You mentioned you were shooting from a lead sled, is something putting upward pressure on the magazine? Monopoding off the magazine shouldn't matter, but if the feed lips or latch cutout are out of spec it might cause malfunctions. Have you tried riding the charging handle forward to see if it hangs up at a particular spot?

This is all good info guys - I will look through everything and give it a shot. I will keep you updated.

New guns have a lot of friction from unmated parts that need to break into working together.

The friction in a new, unlubricated AR is high enough to prevent functioning.

Remove the magazine, check the chamber to make sure that the gun is empty, and then hand cycle the action 200 times without lubrication.

Then, break the gun down, clean and lubricate, then cycle the action another 100 times.

You should be able to feel the action working much smoother.  Now take the gun to the range and shoot 200 full power rounds (US made M193 or M855) through it to continue the break in.

Don't worry about stoppages until you have at least 500 rounds through the gun.

Don't lube the rounds. You don't want lube in the chamber. Lube bcg well, light lube on the charging handle. Few drops in the fcg. New builds like to be run wet. Wear eye pro so you don't get lube in your eyes when shooting. Yes, I run 'em that wet during break in.

I only use CLP.

Okay Guys,

Phew - got her home and tightened the mag catch one revolution, did a detailed cleaning, well pretty detailed - not white glove or anything. I made sure to lube it up well, even sprayed a "very small," amount of CLP in the carrier when assembled, charged it a few times and hit the range. I blew threw 100 rounds of ammo with no issues!

Now I just have to get it sighted in. I bore sight it via a laserlyte bore tool and when I hit the range I am on paper, get close, then lose it all together (the groupings, even with wolf are amazing btw)! I boresighted at 25 yards. I went out and pointed it down the street, maybe 2 blocks, and bore sighted it on a stop sign...gonna hit the range soon. I had no idea that I would have this much trouble zeroing it. I am just so new to all of this stuff.

here's a link that will give you some insight as to where and what needs lubricating and how much:

here's some for sighting in:

Yup...definitely would better your chances.

Have you tried one round in the mag?
