I just took my AR out to the range today for the first time. I had a 20 rd. Box of American Eagle .223 (I wanted to use somewhat decent ammo for zeroing my irons). Shot all of it no problems with a pmag. Then I switched to cheap stuff (Monarch brass cased .223) I shot about 15 rounds of that then I started getting what looked like short stroking. I had to manually eject the spent casing and load another like a single shot. I did check headspace when I was building it and that all came back ok so I know it's not a headspace issue.

I'm wondering if Monarch is too weak to be cycling a new gun. I don't think the gas block is misaligned or the gas tube either since it cycled perfectly with American eagle. Does anyone have experience with this ammo being notoriously weak? I'm open to any advice anyone can give me. Thanks guys!

Not all ammo works in all rifles.

That's probably not your problem.

in many cases, You need to break- in the rifle before you can shoot cheap ammo.  I would use at least 200 rounds of full power brass cased ammo and consider it broken in.

Make sure you properly lube the rifle too.

Thanks for the advice! I'm going to go to academy tomorrow and get some American eagle 5.56 tomorrow.
