I can hear my spring when I shoot.  Is this normal?  I've shot a few other AR's and don't recall hearing it then.  I built this gun, PSA lower and collapsable stock.  Any thoughts is appreciated.

It's normal and you'll get a variety of responses about whether its should bother you, or not.

I lightly grease the interior of the tube, it pretty much eliminates the noise.

Others will tell you to leave it alone and live with it.

I do the same. Lube the inside of the tube and put a light coat of oil on the spring. In my pistol I run the spikes STT2 buffer and that helps too. My pistol does not make noise. It's normal though.

I guess I've shot ARs long enough I don't even hear it anymore.

To be fair I do hear it when I shoot one after not having done so for a while. Bit long before the session is over I'm back to not noticing the noise. But I'm sure it would be obvious if I shot a rifle and the noise wasn't there.

I've heard this for years. I've never heard mine ring while I've been shooting it. Only when I cycle the action or flick it with a finger.

No sprooing, mag swap.  No need to even look if you have a healthy weapon.  I like the sprooing.

I have installed the JP flat wound springs in two guns with full A2 stocks and it mildly reduces the sproing.  It was enough, though.  In one it was originally so loud that it was distracting.  Now with good grease and the JP spring it's almost ignorable.  I don't have the sproing in my carbine, but that has a commercial tube and I wonder if that makes a difference.

Doesn't eliminate it completely but it makes it a hell of lot less noticeable. I run these in quite a few ars and like them alot, mainly for the mega addition of extended life expectancy of the spring (around 750,000 cycles iirc, I do know I have more than several cases on a few that show zero change in length). The only time I don't use these is when i use a xp Wolff spring (which also for some reason seems a lot less noisy than a standard mil spec spring). The only time I really notice the sproing honestly though is with a rifle a1 or a2 stock on a rifle extension, really don't recall ever noticing it on any guns (mine or others I've used) that had collapsible stocks on carbine tubes or even pistols for that matter, now that I think about it.

Either way, I too reccomend the damage enhanced springs whole heartedly, they're cheap and they work and last at least as long as several mil spec springs. I don't know what they coat them with but its corrosion resistant and tough stuff (purpleish/greyish kind of colored) but its kinda slippy too. Give one a try, you might like and if not it can be a cheap enough standby/ back up part for the range bag.

Smearing the spring with a little moly grease makes a huge difference and costs nothing.  The traditional old school fix.

rat1624,

This is normal so don't worry about it! If it helps I usually put a few drops of oil in that area and that might quiet it down a bit.

More noise is caused by end burs on the end of the spring coils than anything else.
Once these burs are cleaned up so they are not scrapping down the inside of the tube, then light amount of grease on the spring coils inside and out help the inside of the tube body to self polish via the spring to way lesson the noise you will hear.

Also, take a good look at the buffer bumper roll pin, and if needed, use a file to flush it out with the sides of the tube so it not dragging down the spring coils as well.

In my opinion the sproing is from harmonics through vibration of the coils due to the shape and routing of the coils when rapidly compressed. Putting a layer of oil on the spring seems to suppress the noise though. Or dampen if you will.
