So, I was testing out a new upper today and there was a problem. I was shooting TULAMMO brand steel cased ammunition (don't hate), the rounds were firing, but for a while, they were not extracting at all! The cases would be stuck in the chamber and had to be bumped out with a cleaning rod from the front side. It sucks! My barrel is chrome lined and was going through a "Break in".
Why is this rifle having issues when my others ran better to begin with? Bad extractor? Tight barrel? Aliens? Obamacare?

HELP!!!

Try some different ammo.

Dirty chamber. It probably wasn't as clean as you think. Probably will work fine after a good scrubbing. PS, I shoot the steel stuff too!

Much (all?) of the steel cased ammo is loaded to the lower 223 pressure as opposed to the full power 5.56 loads.

With a tight new gun or one with a dirty or rough chamber this very well could cause failure to extract.

If you are just breaking in a new gun I wouldn't loose any sleep over it .

Use some full power 5.56 for break in if you can find it , clean the chamber before and after shooting the steel and carry on.

Keep lubeing the bolt and other parts of the gun

I tried some PMC ammo and it did the same exact thing. I eliminated it to a rifle issue.

Thank you sir, best answer so far! I will clean it tonight, shoot it when I am off call (sometime within the next 50 years), and see how the reliability is.

This is what I would say.

I gave it a thorough cleaning! Thank you so much for your response. Glad I am not the only one who enjoys being chintzey.

Had the same problem (Tula) needing to be tapped out.  Did two things and never had the problem again.  Bought a Spikes T3 buffer (Model 1 Sales M4 clone, carbine gas system).  Also got some flitz and a 30 caliber mop and my cordless drill.  Light polishing on the chamber for less than a minute.  No hard pressure and no serious time on the flitz.  To be honest, after the chamber polishing I never tried the standard buffer again.

I couldn't get through more than 1 mag of tula before, now I can do tula mag dumps.  I know there are those that say don't mess with the chamber but if you want to try something totally reversible, try a heavier buffer.  What's your barrel length and gas system length?

This rifle has a 16 inch barrel with a carbine length DI gas system on it. I have no idea what buffer. It seems pretty heavy to me.

The poly coating on the  steel ammo gets scrapped off during loading and extractions, and ends up with a powderized poly coating on the chamber walls and parts.

No standard firearm cleaning solvent is going to dissolve such, so the poly powderized fouling has to be scrubbed out with a chamber brush by hand.

So when you stated the the rifle was cleaned, using a chamber brush with CLP by hand should have been one of the steps taken to remove all the fouling (poly in this case).  I stated this since if you choked out on tula, then even trying brass ammo after such until the powderized fouling is scrubbed out is going to end the same as the steel ammo problems.
