OK, I just have a Bushmaster ar-15 ORC and it's been great for my needs so far but someone said something the other day that was shooting it that annoyed me greatly.  He said he smelled "gas" pretty strong while shooting it and it shouldn't be that strong on a new gun.  I have around 150 rounds through it so far and haven't had a malfunction.  I did have to tighten up the barrel nut because the forearm was a canted but that's the only issue.  Now, what the heck is he talking about?  It's a gas driven rifle.  Aren't you supposed to smell gas?!  Guess it depends if the wind is blowing in your face.  He was a a marine at one point so that's the only credibility I give him to his statement about the gas smell.  He said that very old AR's would have that gas smell but a new one "shouldn't".  I mean, it runs fine... Do I have anything to worry about?  Does it sound like he even knows what he's talking about?!?!?  If I did have a leak, somewhere, wouldn't I have functionality problems?  argh, why did he have to say anything about it?!  I even mentioned to him that I probably run it too wet but he said the smell isn't oil, it's gas leaking.

My guess is that you are over-oiling,check the sticky here in the maintenance/cleaning section of the forum and adhere to the instructions, your choice of oil...

Some Marines are geniuses, some aren't.

Considering the weapon is a gas operated system, the smell of "gas" will always be present.
The only gas related "problem" I have dealt with on old Marine rifles is when gas vents between the upper and lower at the point right under the charging handle.
That venting may bring a tear to your eyes, it may not.
There is no problem with your weapon. Semper Fi.

Ammonia smell from some types of ammo, it leaks around the charging handle. Especially noticed when indexing nose to charging handle for good cheekweld. Normal to smell something there when firing.

Very good, these replies make me feel a lot better.  I finally have all of my guns functioning, for once, until he said something so I was pissed.  Thanks again for the replies.

IIRC, BCM makes a CH to reduce the gas venting with piston or suppressed systems. I recall reading a post around here somewhere about making your own with some rtv silicone if it bothers you.

Edit. It is PRI gas buster charging handle not BCM.

Some guns are just gassier than others.  I have one or two that I get a greater whiff than the others.  As long as it's cycling fine, it's probably no a big deal.
