| OK, I just have a Bushmaster ar-15 ORC and it's been great for my needs so far but someone said something the other day that was shooting it that annoyed me greatly. He said he smelled "gas" pretty strong while shooting it and it shouldn't be that strong on a new gun. I have around 150 rounds through it so far and haven't had a malfunction. I did have to tighten up the barrel nut because the forearm was a canted but that's the only issue. Now, what the heck is he talking about? It's a gas driven rifle. Aren't you supposed to smell gas?! Guess it depends if the wind is blowing in your face. He was a a marine at one point so that's the only credibility I give him to his statement about the gas smell. He said that very old AR's would have that gas smell but a new one "shouldn't". I mean, it runs fine... Do I have anything to worry about? Does it sound like he even knows what he's talking about?!?!? If I did have a leak, somewhere, wouldn't I have functionality problems? argh, why did he have to say anything about it?! I even mentioned to him that I probably run it too wet but he said the smell isn't oil, it's gas leaking. |

Considering the weapon is a gas operated system, the smell of "gas" will always be present.
The only gas related "problem" I have dealt with on old Marine rifles is when gas vents between the upper and lower at the point right under the charging handle. That venting may bring a tear to your eyes, it may not. There is no problem with your weapon. Semper Fi. |
