Hi all I have a early 70's Colt ar15 Carbine model.  I purchased it new about 15 years ago in unfired condition and since than have put maybe 500 rounds thru it with no issues.  Recently I was shooting steel cased Russian ammo (Tulos?) and was getting jams and the rifle wouldn't pick up the next cartridge when it ejected a spent round.  I tossed the rest of the Russian ammo, cleaned it really well and put it away.  Sunday we were shooting quality brass as usual and it was having a problem picking up the next round pretty regularly.  I broke it down and by accident discovered the gas key on top of the bolt assembly was loose, loose enough to rattle when I shook it.  I was able to tighten the allen screws and restaked them.  I figure this is the issue but is there anything else to look for before I take it back out to the range?

Loose gas key will surely give you short strokes.  I'll bet you nailed it.

You fixed it.  Go have fun at the range.  The standards for staking were very different in the early days.  They staked from the top down and often only once.
