Hi, I am new to both the site and shooting an AR15.  A couple of days after the Newtown event, while I didn't have a desire to own one, thought it would be a good plan to get one now as they may not be available later.  So I went to the store and there were plenty in stock and I decided on a S&W MP15.  Finally got out last weekend to shoot it, took one shot and the empty casing would not eject and I could not get it out.  When I got home I used a cleaning rod to knock it out.  Went back out today hoping that it would work, same thing three different times.  I am shooting new American Eagle 5.56x45 55 grain FMJ XM193BL.  Any thoughts on what the issue might be?

Thanks

Sounds like a bad or missing extractor spring, maybe bad extractor.

Less likely, but could also be some more serious issue like an improperly cut or very rough chamber.

Just to make sure, do the expended cases look just like unfired cases?  I don't know what would happen if you chambered 223/5.56 in a 5.45x39 rifle.

I wouldn't recommend firing it any more until we get a better idea of what is happening.  If it's something really simple like an extractor spring probably just as easy to replace it yourself rather than ship the entire rifle and wait for the repair.  If it's something more involved or we can't figure it out, I'm sure S&W will take care of it for you.

If you could pull the bolt carrier group out and disassemble it, maybe get a couple photos of the bolt face.  Then remove the extractor and a photo of the disassembled bolt and inside of the extractor.

If you're not familiar with how to disassemble those parts I (or someone) can give you a step by step, it's not difficult.  Those parts should be disassembled, cleaned and lubricated on a new rifle anyway.

Failure to clean and lube the weapon before putting it into service. Hence the reason that the cases where sticking inside the chamber is that is still contained assembly/protective grease that was not scrubbed out of the camber by hand with a chamber brush.  Also going to go out on a limb and guess that the correct solvents where not used to clean and lube the rifle as well (BreakfreeCLP is the correct solvent to both, lube and clean the platform, with only a copper solvent used to clean the copper out of the barrel bore only.

FWIW I just had a friend here report the same problem with extraction with his brand new S&W MP15.  I dont think it's getting STUCK in the chamber though. What's up S&W?
I'm having him check for the spring and insert. He said it won't strip a round from the chamber by hand either.
ETA: He said he did strip and clean the rifle before he shot it the first time.
