Hi there,

Maybe someone can help me out with a problem I'm having with my AR-15. Long story short...Was shooting a 16 inch midlength with no problems. Built my own 11.5 inch upper with a DPMS barrel, swapped uppers and the thing didn't work anymore. Used the same mag, bolt and lower. It feeds alright, shoots alright but the brass isn't ejected. It feeds the next round and then it jams. I've shot it again with one round in the magazine and the bolt is held open by the boltcatch but the empty case just lies on top of the empty mag. Even stranger, I can't duplicate it at home. Cycling the weapong with dummies it works as advertised. The dummy extracts and ejects perfectly. I've double checked the gassystem. I use a freefloating tube but I've made a spacer from an unused handguard endcap with a dremmel to ensure the proper placement of the gasblock. I've seen a Youtube movie of someone with a similar problem and he suggests swapping buffersprings. Much to my shame I must admit that I have had the same spring in there for 13 years, although I haven't shot the weapon that much. (Only recently I've rediscovered the joy of shooting it and I'm putting more rounds thru it). The spring was indeed a full inch shorter than its replacement. Will this fix my problem or are there other suggestions out there? To the best I can judge the bolt/BCG is in good condition.

Thank ya much

With the upper installed, pull back on the charging handle all the way, and confirm that the face of the bolt does not retract back past the back of the ejection port window.

Next with the bolt in hand, cam a spent case off the extractor, and press the ejector in a few times. The ejector should have great spring tension, but at the same time, the ejector should not be binding up in the bolt face channel for it.

Lastly, go to the hardware store and pick up a #60 ring for about a dime.   Pull the extractor, and add the O ring around the extractor spring to add more tension to the extractor.   This will insure that the extractor is not slipping off the rim of the spent casing as it being extracted from the chamber.
