today I was looking at my as yet unfired MP15 Sport and ?I pulled back the charging handle and the pushed in the bolt catch or bolt stop.  The bolt locked open as it should but now I can't get it to release and the bolt is stuck open.  I'm new to any rifle and don't know if I'm missing something.  I've done a basic cleaning of the bolt assembly and everything seemed to function properly when I was done.  Any help would be appreciated.

is the buffer spring in it? you wouldnt believe the number of trainees I see forget the buffer and spring and then pull the bolt back. the look on their face is priceless when they slap the bolt release and nothing happens.

If all the parts are still in the rifle...

Pull the charging handle rearward and release. The bolt catch should get out of the way automatically.

The bolt catch is spring loaded and is supposed to be held "down" until the magazine follower pushes it "up". It only stays "up" when a magazine follower is pushing it.

The bolt catch can also be caught on the forward tension of the bolt trying to close/go forward. By pulling the bolt rearward (by using the charging handle) it relieves the tension on the bolt stop, allowing it to pivot out of the way. This assumes there is no magazine inserted

You can only learn one way. If you should go with an experienced

AR shooter when you go to shoot it for the first time.
