I have been shooting ARs/M16/M4s for a long long time now. I just came into a problem that I have never experienced.
I have a few ARs, but one is giving me fits all of a sudden. DPMS Lo-pro classic. I bought the gun new in box last fall. I've got about 700 rounds or so through it. Back in January, at the range, it broke a couple gas rings, no big deal, had that before. Replaced the rings, was working great till yesterday when at the range, I went to load a mag and it would not seat at all. I tried a different mag, same effect. So I tightened the mag catch, no change. The only way it will seat is with the bolt locked to the rear or if the mag has less than 15 rounds in it. I'm using a variety of mags from GI issue to P-Mags, I tried all of the mags I have to see if I could narrow it down but they all do the same. Plus they will seat fine in my other ARs. What could of caused this issue to suddenly pop up? It used to seat fine. Thoughts? |

Swing open the two receiver halves.
Insert mag in the lower. Gently close the two halves, and observe what and where it's hitting. I shouldn't have to say it - but I will: You're going to have to have ammo in the mag (unless you've got a few snap caps to throw on top of an otherwise-almost-full magazine) in order to do this check. Be Safe! Make sure the rifle is cleared, and still watch the muzzle at all times even as you're fiddling with the two halves. Finger off the trigger, and hammer cocked with the safety on. |
| I have done this, it appears that it is hitting the bottom of the bolt carrier. As I rack it back and cycle it, it leaves a distinct but shallow scrap on the top of the brass until theres less than 15-20 rounds left. Its almost like the bottom of the bolt carrier swelled or something. I'm confident its the bolt carrier thats causing the issue, everything else looks normal. right now, im away visiting my parents, i brought this along to shoot at the local range but no joy. I'll swap bolt carriers when i get home next week and report back. |

As for seating a fully loaded mag against a closed B/C, start the mag into the well, the use the palm of your hand to slap the mag up and set it against the catch. As for is you have a real problem, rifle unloaded, take a look at the front inside of the mag well straight to the upper receiver edge. The two should be on the same plain, and if you have a problem that would warrant the rifle going back to DPMS to corrrect, that would be the upper receiver lip proud of the front of the lower receiver front mag well edge and preventing the mags from seating home(even with a palm slap). |
