I am in the process of building my ar. Spikes lower, dpms lpk, yhm upper, and .dpms bolt carrier group with unknown charging handle. I just put the bolt carrier in and lubed points I figured would need it. Felt gritty and smelled like something was burning. Now I try pulling bolt back and can move it a quarter of an inch and then it wont move. I think it might be the piece that holds the buffer spring in, but am not certain

If im reading this correctly, you close your rifle and push the takedown pin in, then the bolt wont pull back?  But it moves freely with receiver up?

I would remove the upper from the lower, then remove the bcg, then try to move the bcg in and out of the lower simulating how the action works, see what is hanging it up?  Is this the frist ar you built?

Check the lowers function, pull the hammer back and hold tension against it so when you pull the trigger it doenst smash your rec. then pull the trigger, then pull the hammer again and set the safety, then pull the trigger it should not release the hammer...  Now your buffer function is easy to check too, just push it in and out with your bcg..

First ar build, the whole bcg is correctly built, bolt in first, then the nob that turns 90 degrees to allow the firing pin in,then the pin holder is in the correct place. trigger group function test is good. when i slide just the bolt in the buffer assembly it rides fine, but i believe that the little detent that is holding the buffer in is the problem but cannot confirm nor do i know how to. I tried to pivot the upper away from the lower while trying to rack. the bcg and charging handle moved a quarter inch and then locked up even when it cleared the buffer and pivoted all the way up
