New to AR15.com so Hi all! Need some help. Ive owned a few AR platforms and built a few as well. This ones got me. Picked up a Bushy MOE (had to have deal). Took it out and less that 100 rds, had a gas ring failure. Bolt carrier stuck open in cycle with round in chamber. Brought it home and got it working, replaced rings. Took it out again, same thing. So this time I swapped out the carrier with a FA that I had laying around. Problem solved..sorta. Carrier from Bushy was WAY WAY tight.. my guess out of spec. Anyway, I was shooing mixed black box federal, green tip federal, and steel case monarch (from local Academy). All brass case ammo was ejecting to about 1 o clock and steel bout 4 o clock. Also bolt will not stay open at all after last round. I'm using GI mags with green and magpul followers. These mags I havent had problem with before on other ARs I have. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Give bushmaster a call, and they will replace the B/C for free (defective from the start).
The problem is either the beginning taper section of the carrier gas chamber was reamed too far back towards the back of the carrier, with the rings clearing/getting in front of the taper entry section when the bolt goes to unlock, and when the bolt goes to lock up again, the ring is torn apart as it force back into the smaller gas chamber section, Or, The key allen bolt/it's threaded channel section, is protruding into the same gas chamber section of the carrier, and the ring getting hung up on it as the bolt goes to move, and tearing it apart. P.S. if they don't replace it for free, post back and let us know why. Even if you where the 5'th owner of the rifle, this carrier left the factory as defective unit, and it should never have left that way. About the only want I can see them not replacing the B/C for free, if this is not one of their B/C's to begin with ( not hard for them to deny since there B/C come with no markings as the norm, but if you post photo's of the key staking, we can pretty much narrow it down to if it's one of theirs or not ). |

When you say the carrier is way too tight, does that mean that the bolt assembly is tight when it rotates in and out of the bolt carrier, or is it tight as the bolt carrier assembly travels back and forth inside of the upper receiver? What did the damaged gas ring(s) look like? When you remove the bolt assembly from the bolt carrier, look inside the area where the bolt rides inside the carrier. Look to see if there is shiny chrome lining, also look at the right side inside the bolt carrier at the two exhaust port holes, are there any burrs of metal that would catch on the gas rings?

| When I took it appart to clean when I got it the bolt rotated but was extremely tight. I cleaned and used CLP on it. Upon assembly I had to almost force it in. I wish I kept the rings, if you can picture the gas ring closest to the bolt face lifted out and hung up in the carrier. I could see it through the vent holes. Had to use a lot of clp in order to get it to budge. It has a nice chrome lining on it.... |
