So, I was installing a new grip onto my AR earlier, and once the grip was on I couldn't pull the trigger or move the safety.  When I removed the grip I found the detente spring was stuck inside the receiver and I now I can't get it out.  Does anyone have any advice on how to get it out, and perhaps on how to avoid getting it stuck in the future?

Try bending a very small hook in the end of a paper clip to pull the spring out. Once the spring is out make sure you put the detent in before the spring. Hope this helps..wolfman

Yep, forgot to install the detent in the channel first, then the spring up against the bottom of the detent pin.

Best guess now is that the end of coil is either wedged between the selector and selector channel, or just wedged in the upper smaller step of the channel, and may end trashing the spring when it's all said and done.  As for the detent, did you forget to install it point side up, or loose is when you pulled the grip?  If so, then you may have to order a new selector detent when you order a new selector spring.

I was able to get the spring out, but it's trashed.  I realize now that the entire reason for its failure was that I put the detente spring into the wrong hole (which is, coincidentally, what she said).  Needless to say, I feel really, really stupid for having made that mistake.  Next time I'll know better than to try and reassemble something without first checking a diagram.  I'll be heading out tomorrow to see if I can't find a replacement somewhere.  Thanks to both of you for your help!
