Took my new middy out to the range the other day.  Del-Ton 16" CL middy, FF handguard, Harris bipod on a Larue mount, Vortex 2-7.  I haven't ordered a good mount for the scope yet, but I wanted to get the rifle out and do a function check and at least get the scope zeroed for the time being.  I threw on a pair of cheap rings that were laying about and headed out.

I managed to get the scope dialed in, but I was consistently getting 2-3" fliers at 25 yards.  I'd get three or four shots grouped pretty nice and tight, and then it'd throw a shot or two.

I think I'm going to address the scope mount first, but should I be looking into other potential problems?

Free float hand guard with the bipod mounted to it?

If not, and the bipod is mounted out in the range of the FSB on the hand guards, you could be torquing the barrel too, over possible just the scope mounts not  holding solid.

What ammo are you using?

How long are you waiting between shots?

Yup, bipod mounted on the free float handguard.

IMI M855.  I was initially waiting probably 5-10 seconds between shots, but accuracy seemed similar even when I did a little more rapid fire towards the end of my session.

After you get the scope remounted, try groups with target or hunting ammo.  Fire one shot off the target to heat the barrel, then wait 30 seconds between shots for your group.

It is important to discount the cold bore shot, and wait the same amount of time between shots, no less than 30 seconds if you want to avoid stringing or velocity jump.

Yeah, I wasn't counting the fouling/cold bore shot in my assessment.  I'll give it a shot taking some more time when I get out there next.

It's strange I experienced the same thing today with an SPR I built off a Colt HBAR. I've never been able to get it to shoot great with factory XM193 ammo, so I picked up some PRVI 69grn MATCH. I was shooting 5 shot groups at 100 yards and it would shoot 3 rounds in ~3/4", and two of the five would be 2-3" away. I know I was doing my part, I didn't jurk the trigger or flinch, each shot felt good. I even had a much more experienced shooter/reloader shoot it and it did the exact same thing, and my other rifle (10.5 mk18) was shooting better groups with its aimpoint.

Normally I would just try different ammo, but this rifle was built off my first AR a Colt HBAR. I've shot a lot of wolf through it, scrubbed it with a steel cleaning rod and had it threaded when the ban ended. I just can't help but think I've somehow damaged the barrel and that's why it's throwing shots.
