OK, last week I cleaned my S&W M&P 15. I field stripped the rifle took out the bolt carrier and firing pin cleaned it and correctly reassembled the weapon. The problem is that once I put about 20 rounds in a mag and go insert the mag and the mag will not catch and lock into place. I have to hit the bottom of the magazine for it to lock in place. Then once I go to press the mag release button I can feel that there is a lot of pressure on the button. I have 2 mag’s and I have the same problem with both, but I do not have this problem when the mag’s are empty also I did not have this problem before I cleaned the rifle. Which makes me think I did something wrong, but I have took it apart and reassembled it 3 times! And I have done it the same way as I have a 100 times before and never had any problems tell now. Please any advice or ideas was to what might be causing this problem. Thank you

You say you're loading 20 rounds...in a 30 rnd mag, or a 20?

30 round mag's, I would put a box in the mag and the box's I buy have 20 rounds in them. Also If I fill the 30 round mag it will not lock in at all.

Does it do the same thing when you try to insert the mag with the bolt back as with the bolt forward?

With the bolt locked back the mag seats normally and with out problem

The problem is if im ever in a situation where I have to do a reload b/c I know the mag currently in the rifle is low and I do a reload to a full mag the bolt will not be locked to the rear it will be in battery ready to fire and I don’t want to have to worry about the mag I just inserted is going to fall out or not

Spring pressure on the rounds in the mag is pushing them (rounds) into the bottom of the bolt carrier, making it hard to latch.

Not uncommon, but it sure sounds like you've got an extreme case (20 rounds in a 30 round mag).

Any issues before you did your cleaning?

What type mags?  Brand?

I understand you're saying that this never happened before, so that IS strange. Particularly with only 20 rounds in a 30 rounder. But as far as the whole, "I have to hit the bottom of the magazine" thing....you really should do that every time anyway just to make sure..

The only other think I can think to tell you (assuming you're using the same mags as before you had this problem) is to drop your bolt forward and use a flashlight or something so you can look into the magwell and see what it looks like. Is something in the way? I don't know I'm kind of stumped.

My apologies, I don’t mean to sound like an ass, it’s just extreme frustration on my part. They are Kay Industries INC. New Britain, CT. They were given to me when I bought the rifle. That was my first thought is that it is a mag problem, but this problem happened after I cleaned the rifle so that is why Im hesitant to think that

No I didn’t have this problem before I cleaned the rifle and it is the same magazines

It sounds like the ammo is binding in the mags.  Pull your mags apart and clean them.  Load the same ammo you have used in the past without problems.  Slap the back side of the mag against your hand to seat the ammo.

If it still binds load one round into the mag and insert it in the rifle, continue adding one round at a time until it jams.  Then place the mag on a flat surface and check to see if it is bulging.

Check the magwell in the rifle to make sure it's clean.

Sounds like the mags to me .... buddy of mine purchased a few of those at a gun show for cheap but had nothing but problems with them ... don't think he had seating problems like you OP but I know he had some pretty serious feed issues with them. I would get some better mags and with you only having the 2 mags it sure won't hurt to have a couple more in the inventory.

I put Magpul followers in all my mags and haven't had any problems since.

I only use Magpul window mags and never had a problem...also the Gi mags are also good but I personally dont like to repaint them every couple of years so Magpuls work better for me
