Hello ladies and gentlemen,
I have an all Stag A3 16" Carbine. I have an A2 stock and buffer. I am running black Pmags (no window) and some Brownells aluminum mags, all 30 rounders. The problem is that when I charge the ar with a full mag, 30rounds, it will not fly home with enough force to seat the round. Sometimes not even enough to utilize the forward assist. At times it will just push the round a scant 1/3 of the way out of the mag. Also in the past I have had problems with the actual bullet being pushed into the casing and not seating into the chamber; this first happened at a competition I was in and I attributed it to bad ammo (Aguila). This rifle has only maybe 200- 250 rounds put through it since I have had it. I keep it cleaned and lubed. I have swithced out mags and it does the same for all mags. But, it did not always do this, it has only happened in the last few days. Help!!! This is my primary for home defense. I have the AK beside the bed now until this clears up. Any help is appreciated! Edited to turn on email notification. |

Update:
I disassembled, cleaned and lubed all my magazines. The ones I had from Brownells, their brand, were very hard to strip all the rounds out of the mag for cleaning. Each round's casing wanted to get caught on the edge of the mag. I also cleaned my rifle and got all the grease off. I then reassembled and used Corrosion X instead of grease. I tried the Brownell mags again and the same thing happened, failure to feed. The first one almost slammed home but I needed to do the forward assist to seat. The second round's casing got caught on the edge of the mag. Similar things happened with the Bushmaster aluminum 30 round mag. I re-inserted my Pmags and they worked with no problem, this time. I am kind of disgruntled with this whole situation. I do not believe my rifle was very dirty. I cannot believe three magazines (the Brownells) could be all bad at once, plus the Bushmaster. I'm not sure what to think of this experience. Thanks for the help Dano523!! Mark |

So the brass casing itself is getting caught on the mag body? ... that to me sounds like the follower isn't doing it's job ... have you tried these problem mags in any other rifles?
About 99% of the time these issues are found to be mag related .... however .... there was a thread not long ago about someone breaking their mag catch (the button had cracked where the catch threads into it) just from normal usage but he didn't know it had cracked right away .... he was having similar issues as yourself. I just wonder if it is cracked but you just can't see it and it's letting those "problem mags" sit a little to low and it's making it seem like a mag issue. There was also another thread or two about out of spec mag catches ... but since the rifle was functioning properly with your current mag catch then that one is probably out.

I will check out the mag-catch scenario, seems plausible. On one particular occasion I was trying to seat a magazine and it would not catch, tried another one real quick and it did not catch. When I looked at the mag button, here it was all the way depressed and stuck right on the inside of the mag well. I depressed it and it bounced out. Crazy. Thanks for the advice Gatorhunt. Mark |

Measure the buffer (action) spring. I got a bad one form LMT once and it was bad in under 300 rounds. First noticed a problem with failure to fully go into battery when loading from a nearly full mag. A new action spring solved the problem. Do you have any specs I can measure against? Thanks for your help!! |
