Took my ar out today and it started not extracting the casing and jamming the next round into the back of the casing. After getting the stuck case out I noticed I could not pull the charging handle all the way to the rear. I can't even pull it far enough back to lock back the bolt. The bolt and charging handle slide easily through the upper when disassembled. I am thinking this may be caused by something being wrong with the buffer tube.
Am I on the right track? Buffer tube is a commercial tube. Is there anything else that could be wrong? Please help a noob to the ar platform out! |

So after the issues you had, the charging handle could be fully retracted? Could you retract it fully before shooting? Where did the parts come from? It sounds like you might have two separate issues - maybe not. Until today it has always fully retracted. I started having problems around 400 rounds through the pipe today. It is a commercial stock and buffer that was a gift. Not 100% positive but I believe it to be a UTG stock. I figured I would replace it when it failed. On a separate note I have been meaning to IM you about upper specs. |

Nothing that I can see. The charging handle comes about halfway back ten it gets really hard to move. Using a wooden block I can force it all the way into the buffer tube, but there is a ton of resistance.
With the upper taken off the buffer slides all the way down the buffer tube same as it always did. I am thinking that maybe the tube is just enough off that the bcg is hitting inside a bent tube??? Not sure what would have bent it though... |

Pull the buffer and check for debris in the receiver extension tube,
Pull the FCG and check to see if you have a blown primer piece hiding under the trigger or if the J spring on the hammer is trying to walk out the bottom of the hammer.. Pull the bolt and confirm that the tube is still aligned with the key (run the carrier alone in the upper receiver). |

Dano,
FCC looks good, no blown primers and nothing walking out. I haven't pulled the buffer yet because my armorers wrench is at my house, and I am not. Another piece of info that might help is when I pull the charging handle, the bcg goes halfway back. If I am holding the gun in the air it immediately slides forward. But if I am pushing the buttstock into the ground to get leverage on the charging handle, the bcg gets stuck in the buffer. As soon as I let up on the downward pressure it releases the bcg forward again. |

UPDATE
Dano I think I may have lied to you. Took apart buffer it looks fine. I then noticed the hammer seems to go back quite a bit. Pulling the bcg and pushing it through the buffer tube assembly shows it dragging on the hammer big time. Everything looks to be installed correctly and it has run fine for over 1500 rounds total, but I am going to disassemble and reassemble the FCC again and see what happens |

Update 2
Buffer tube has a couple destroyed threads. Fixed them up, retightened and function checked. Problem is fixed for now, but I doubt the threads would hold up under live fire for long. Damn, looks like I finally get to buy a new buffer tube and buttstock assembly! Thanks to you guys who responded, I am feeling more and more confident in my knowledge of this weapons system. When I get back home I will email you 87gn. |
