[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Charging Handle Gouging Reciever

I have a S&W M&P15. The area where the charging handle latch grips the upper reciever is bare aluminum, the anodizing is completely worn off. Is this normal, or is something wrong? Will it continue to dig into the reciever or will it stop at some point? The charging handle is stock as far as I know. I have not used the charging handle very much, although it is my first AR and I have been playing with it quite a bit.

It is normal for wear to occur in that area with repeated manipulations of the charging handle.

Will it wear to a point and then stop, or will it chip into the reciever and get worse and worse, eventually requiring a new upper reciever?

It will continue to wear to some degree, but when it "wears out" you'll have replaced the barrel a few dozen times.

Effectively, it stops after a while.
