If this is a noob question, I apologize. I searched and didn't get an answer.
I was thinking about getting a replacement bolt for each of the AR's, would I need to assign them to a certain rifle and then have each one headspaced for that rifle? Also if I upgraded the carrier, would I have to have this redone? |

1st, the bolt carrier has nothing to do with headspace.
I have 1 spare bolt right now for 2 ARs. I check that bolt once a year against both barrels to make sure the bolt/barrel tolerance is in spec. I also check the bolts that are normally installed once a year. Ask around in your local hometown forum . There is probably someone local to you that already has the gage you need. BSW |

Quoted:
If a bolt cracks, the manufactor will replace it for free (read defective part to begin). As for wearing out a bolt, takes around the 30K to 60K range, so best to use the spare money to buy ammo instead. Where do you get that 30/60K range? 5-6K is the current guidance for carbines used by the Navy and USSOCOM. Carbines subjected to a heavy firing schedule can have cracks at the cam pin holes and sheared bolt lugs at 800-1000 rounds |

Difference between civilian semi auto fire (pampered), to these rigs in heavy full auto use (road very, very hard n left out wet).
Also keep in mind that a chrome lined barrel for the civilian side may last upwards of 20 to 30K rounds, while the aforementioned groups can burn one to the ground in less than 10K rounds in the drop of a hat. |

+1 the carrier does not affect headspace.
There is a good chance both bolts will work in either rifle. If that is not the case then obviously you will have to assign them. There are circumstances where a person would assign a bolt to manage headspace, but that generally requires a more precise measurement than a go/nogo gage test. Us paranoid types keep spare bolts so we can keep our weapons running. I have had it happen to me and seen it happen to another. To make it statistically meaningful I have not been hit by lightning nor have I seen anyone else hit by lightning. |
