Rifle is a factory M&P15A that I purchased 2 yrs ago.  Today, I put 40 rounds through it and when I brought it home, the rear takedown pin moved right 1/4 of the way.

My rifle is accurate and I enjoy being able to separate the upper from lower with a push of my finger.  Anyone know of a way to keep this from occuring?

My alternatives are:

Electrical tape when shooting

send it in for S&W's warranty, but not sure if they'll do anything...

Make sure the detent is installed in the hole before the spring?
Is there actually a hole in the pin for the detent to fit into?
Is the detent fitting into take down slot providing enough friction?  (Is the spring long enough, with enough compressive force?)

- Stretch the spring slightly to increase the compressive force?

ETA: I didn't mean 'increase the compressive force' as much as 'take up the slack'
if the spring is an RCH too short to provide enough pressure on the pin.

Yep, the take down detent and spring is retained in the back of the receiver via either the front of a fixed butt stock, or the back plate on a carbine stock.

If you have pulled the stock off the receiver, then chances are you may have either lost the pin or the detent. Also, the pin tips do tend to round after a while, and you may just need to replace the detent if this is the case.

I haven't touched it since I got it, never been taken apart except for field strip/cleaning.

There is a hole in the pin for the detent to engage.  The front takedown definitely has a positive detent engagement in both the open and closed position.

The rear only has it in the open position.

Right now on hold w/ S&W Customer service.  Cross my fingers....

S&W is shipping a label, yay for Smith-Wesson customer service....
