i just bought an acog for my ar-15 a3 and i cant mount it onto the rail without a riser because the front sight post gets in the way. so would it be better to have a gunsmith remove the front sight and put on a flip down? the riser bugs me because of how high it makes the optic sit, and it looks shabby too.

Learn to concentrate on the reticle and the target.  The FSB would just be a shadow, eventually you wouldn't even notice it.
You shouldn't need a riser for the ACOG, but its your rifle and your preference.

I have the same set up.  I thought about a new gas block with a folding front sight, but I don't even notice the sight anymore. If you need to get higher than the front sight, you might want to just mount on a carry handle. Not to mention your going to need a cheek piece so you can shoot it comfortably.  Just give it some time and you won't even notice it.

Find a fellow arfcommer in your area to help you pull your current FSB and install a folding FSB. It's typically a pretty easy job.

What brand of barrel is it?

If all else fails and you can't do it, send it ot ADCO.
