had a couple problems with short stroking last time i went shooting. when i got home i noticed the gas key was loose and the the tube end was a little rough like it had hit against something. the gas tube looked ok. I tightened and re-staked the gas key. also noticed the castle nut on the buttstock was loose. I tightened that back down and put everything back together and cycled it a few times. noticed it was closing all the way. the bolt carrier assemble wasn't shutting all they way when i cycled slowly. i had to tap on the charge handle for it to close. of course if i just pulled the charge handle all the way back and let go it would close without a problem.
was going to upgrade anyway and decided to replace bolt carrier assemble with the one from BCM. also got a new gas tube in case the one i had was damaged. replaced the bolt carrier and noticed the new one wouldn't shut all the way either when cycling slowly. this time the charge handle was all the way in and i had to tap on the stock for the bolt carrier assembly to shut all the way. looking at the upper receiver i don't notice any damage and everything looks smooth. could it be that it's just new and everything is still tight? could i have a weak spring? should i replace the spring and or buffer or should i just try shooting it again and see if it still short strokes? |

Do Not Ride the charging handle.. You found a loose gas key and fixed it. Loose buttstock nut, fixed it. The bolt will close if you let it go.....(sounds good to me)
Give it a good once over, lube it and go SHOOT IT.... Lets us know how it does........ |

As stated, loose key was probably the problem with the shot stroking,
Note: reusing the old key bolt may be fine, but if you find that the key become loose again, replace the bolts to new ones (torque to 37inlbs then restake the key metal into the side spines of the bolts) Now since you have the key tight, check the alignment of the key to the gas tube. To do this, pull the bolt off the carrier, then with just the carrier, slide it into the upper receiver and take a good look at the gas tube end as it enters the key. If needed, tweak the gas tube above the barrel to align the end of the tube to the key. |
