Recently I have noticed on my M4 if I pull back the charging handle and engage the bolt catch that I can either hit the butt of the stock with my hand or bump it on the floor and the bolt will slam closed.

Is there a trick to preventing this, besides not doing what I do to release it, or do I need a new bolt catch?

Yep normal, without an empty mag inserted into the mag well/rig (follower spring holding the catch up), the catch is holding the bolt back via surface tension alone.  Any  jarring of the rifle will allow the bolt to move slightly back off the catch (loose this surface tension), allowing the Bolt catch spring to lower the catch back down to it's at rest position.
