I have an RRA A4 with about 200 rounds through it and now it will not eject the first round fired (FTE).  The casing simply stays up in the chamber and of course its trying to load the next round.  I need a cleaning rod to dislodge it, reload and Bam one round fired and not ejecting - same is stuck.  This just started to happen and its now consistent.  I am thinking I need to change out the extractor spring or get the upgrade kit.  Am I correct in my thinking here and can anyone state for sure this is the issue?  I am used to 1911's where it could be a number of things.  This rifle is brand new - 200 rounds ago.  ok 204 rounds - the last 4 in a row FTE.

Also if it is the extracor spring, which I am told is a simple fix - can anyone point me to some instructions on how to do it or do I need a smith to do this?  Or...  do I send it back to RRA?

Please help I am at a total loss on what to do and how to fix this issue.

Thanks!

Ammo being used?

Has the chamber been fully cleaned, hence a chamber brush used by hand to clean such?

Was copper solvent, such as Hoppes if used, was flushed out of the chamber before upper bearing CLP lubing and  putting the rig into action?

Have you tried a temporary  #60 0-ring around the extractor spring to verify that the increased tension on the extractor is going to solve the problem before you go to the permanent solution for the stronger spring?

Could come down to the only problem with the rifle is either bad ammo, or just not correctly cleaning and lubing the rifle correctly.

Dan0523,

FIrst thank you for replying.  I am wondering about cleaning.  I did do a cleaning at the 180 round mark - er instruction I found here.  It was the first post round cleaning.  Next day I went to the range and fired off a magazine with 20 rounds in it.  The all fired flawlessly.  Then the 21st, 22nd and so on round have all failed to eject.  I read your post as to possibly re-clean and re-check before ordering parts or calling anyone?  Any other suggestions?

As far as replacing spring and o-ring on the extractor, it's an easy job.  No need to send it back or go to gunsmith. You should be able to figure it out by looking at it and using only the firing pin as a tool.

I'll try to find a link with disassembly instructions.

Learn something new everyday...  I never knew that pin in the bolt was that easy to come out.  I had to get a bolt out and try it.
I just always assumed it was a roll pin and would be a pain.

Thanks for posting.

Go ahead and say it RTFM.

dont forget to lube the rifle real good, especially since it is new, it has to get broke in.

good advice so far about cleaning.  New guns sometimes need a wearing in time.

I have a slightly different take on it though.  If it worked for the first 200 rds, and then choked on 4 in a row, you need to take a look at your extractor and make sure the claw hasn't been sheared.  (happened to my wife's 7.62x39 AR last weekend)

I will predict that your extractor and spring are in good shape but there is some piece or crud (usually a chip of brass) somewhere in/on your bolt that is hanging up.
It also is likely something that came with the gun from the factory and just moved around until it hung up a critical part factory guns get a fast wipe after test fire and usually have quite a bit of grit, crud, and nasty on and in them.

On the other hand you could have a weak spring but they would not go from works 100% to fails 100% in one mag

As you now know, whenever problems arise in a gun suddenly acting up the first step after a quick eyeball is to dissemble , clean and re-lube

As others said, clean the chamber, inspect the extractor.  By the way, it's a failure to extract, not fail to eject if the fired case stays in the chamber.

You say you fired off a mag with 20 rounds in it flawlessly but the next rounds have failed.  You don't say if you reloaded the mag or if it is a different mag or if rounds 21 and so on were in the mag originally.  If it is a different mag, then try the mag used for the 20 rounds and see if the problem still exists.  If there were 30 rounds in the mag and after 20 the rifle quit extracting then the other suggestions apply.
