New lower build with a new to me newish upper. BCG is Armalite, but not for certain on that.
With the bolt back, it is no problem. With the bolt forward, it seems to have resistance. It will lock in, but not as easily. Not satisfactorily if I was in a hurry to reload. Is this a common problem? Can/should I remove some material on the bottom of the BCG, as that is obviously the variable in the equation? |
| Some like to “down-load” a mag one or two rounds, to make the locking in place a freshly loaded mag a little easier. But a serviceable magazine should hold and operate at full capacity. The resistance you’re experiencing attempting to load a full magazine with the bolt forward, is normal. |

More info: Pmags work fine. Metal mags do not.
The metal mag I have been trying to use was loaded to 27-or 28, which is how I store them. It is no more or less hard to seat than when full. It is very easy to seat when empty or with only 1 rnd loaded. Apparently I am simply fighting the mag spring pressure as it seats against the bottom of the bolt. Confirm? Fortunately, reloads are usually done with the bolt to the rear, esp the quick ones after firing empty. Just trying to increase my knowledge bout these great tools of freedom. |

I just posted in a thread a few days ago about why to download your mags. My question was if it was just for ease of inserting a mag or if there was anything proven that the mag could malfunction if loaded with 30 rds. The general consentence was download for ease of loading (for tactical reloads) or if you use 20 rd mags as there used to be an issue with the springs wearing out. Not sure if that situation persists as I mainly shoot 30's.
I train to lock the bolt back when doing a tactical reload so there is very little chance that the mag didn't seat properly. I do tactical reloads behind cover so the extra second or two you take to lock the bolt to the rear doesn't really matter IMO. I would rather know that the mag is seated correctly and has 30 rds in it then download for a faster tactical reload. Besides, I have had USGI mags bind when repeatedly inserted in the mag well, even when downloaded to 28. I normally just have to remove a few rds then re-load the mag and it inserts. Bolt locked to the rear is the way to go for me. There will be people who will argue with me but train how you like. |
