This is a Remington umc round that when feeding got stuck in the chamber, the bolt did not close completely.  I could not pull the charging handle to free it.  I had to use a block of wood against the charging handle and hit it with the heel of my hand a few times to loosen it.  This happened midway through a mag.  Had shot about 150 rounds with no issues prior to this.  The rifle had been cleaned and properly lubed.  It is still quite new though, roughly 500 rounds of federal xm193 and Serbian m193.

Is it likely that this round was flawed to begin with and I didn't notice while loading?

If the round was fine, what could have caused this to happen?

My guess...

It was like that from the factory and you didn't notice it while loading the mag.

Sounds like a waste of time and postage for one surplus round of ammo that went bad.

The better idea would be to sort your crappy ammo and pick out the rounds that have flaws. (like imperfections on the neck).

+1million

i had to do this with a couple thousand rounds of XM193 loose pack a few years ago... as you are loading mags just pay attention to the neck and the bullet seating

It's most certainly a defective round from the offset, I've found a couple Milsurp rounds with similar issues, as others have mentioned, simply check your rounds as you're loading them or do a pre-inspectiion on all your rounds just to be safe.

I agree, always check your ammo ahead of time, have found more than a few over time that was junk, of all brands
