New upper assembly arrived today. I took it out of the box and noticed that the dust cover didn't want to close. The plunger on the cover moves freely and springs up normally. I can push the plunger in with my fingernail and it will close. When closed it opens normally when I retract the bolt. I haven't had time to pull out another upper and compare them but it seems like the plunger is sitting a little too high and the flat side of it hits the upper receiver instead of the rounded part near the end.
I know I can send it back but it seems like this should be a quick and easy fix and I really don't want to ship the thing off to get it fixed. Any suggestions? |

Is it a CMMG upper? I just got a CMMG upper in with the same issue. Plunger moves freely but it will not close unless I push the plunger down a little bit.
What I may do is swap out the cover that came off of my A2 upper and put it on my A3 CMMG upper. Do you still have your previous upper? If so, maybe try swapping out your dust cover from that one and see if it fixes the problem. |

I didn't have an upper before so I can't swap that out, but I'll bet I can find one somewhere, although I may have to pay $8 shipping for it. |

I tried using a rubber hammer and it would close and open normally. I emailed CMMG about this and they said they would install a new dust cover or send me a new one if I wanted to change it out myself. They also suggested I try closing it a number of times with the rubber hammer. After about 20 or 25 cycles it got to where I could close it with both thumbs. After 30 or 40 more cycles it closes normally.
I like the way CMMG will stand behind their stuff, offer to send a new part and let the owner change it out, and offer advice that solves the problem without having to change parts or ship anything. Thanks CMMG. |

Thanks CMMG. Glad they offered to let you change it out, but it should work from the factory without the hammer treatment.Sounds like they dealth with it before maybe they know they have an out of spec part??? |

A friend got a CMMG a few weeks ago that has a similar problem. It will close, but it is very difficult... I just worked it for a little while when he was over visiting a few days ago, and it was much better by the time he left. I'm sure it will break in to normal after a while.... just needs a little time. I have three CMMG uppers and swear by them... fantastic equipment. I have had no issues with them. |

It should be perfect but I'd rather have it a little too tight than a little too loose. |
