My buddies AR is eating a lot of gas rings (MCfarland is what he uses) any reason?

Is the bolt chamber (in the carrier) smooth and uniform?

EDIT: Another thought... are they being installed right?  I had an AR-10 bolt with McFarland rings that were all stretched out and distorted.
I threaded new ones on like you would a key on a keyring and had a much better fit.

Rings too tight, and when he goes to install the bolt after cleaning the bolt, he is catching the reduction section and destroying the ring then,

Or

Burs protruding into the gas section at the back key bolt location bottom, and this bur is eating the ring up,

Or,

Reduction edge of the gas section milled too far back on the carrier, and as the bolt moves forward, then back, the ring is catching on the step and causing problem (rings should never reach this section with the cam in place).
