I just shot my Ar for the first time today and it didn't go so well. After every shot the next round was not chambered and I had to pull the charging handle to chamber the next round. I would charge it, shoot it, pull trigger (nothing), charge it, shoot it, and so on. I only shot 100 rounds because it was not working right. It also jammed up several times. I was using wolf and prvi. I have searched the forums and web for answers but I don't know what to do. I thought it could be short stroking but it locks back on the last round everytime. I tried 4 different mags. I removed the fsb and gas tube to make sure they were clear. Could it be that it just needs to break in. Please help. Here is a list of my parts. Bushmaster upper and barrel (factory assembled) Spikes lower RRA LPK LMT BCG with extractor upgrade kit H buffer and standard spring |

Give it a good cleaning, to include a good scrub of the chamber with a chamber brush. Lube it somewhat on the heavier side during the break in. Try different ammo (factory brass cased) and known good mags.
Sorry for the stupid question, but... If you are running a collapsible stock, did you be sure to use a carbine spring and not a rifle length one? |

Drop the wolf ammo in the bushmaster upper until you have at least 1K of round down the barrel of brass case ammo.
In regards to the Privi, change the buffer out to a stock unit instead of the H buffer. The ammo in on the weaker side, and the H buffer is just way over the top for it. If you want to break the rifle in as-is, then you need stronger powered brass case ammo, like M-193. |

I'm in NY so I have a fixed stock, ace entry, with the carbine spring. Confirm that the butt stock screw is not too long and producing into the back of the receiver extension void, hence when you pull the Charging handle all the way back, the face of the bolt is behind the bolt catch, but limiting about 1/4" to 3/8" in front of the back of the ejection port. There is two different length butt stocks screws, being the A-2 screw 5/8" longer than the A-1 screw, and the longer A-2 screw should not be used when a receiver extension end spacer is not is play. If you find that the bolt face will not retract back past the bolt catch, bank on that you have installed the longer incorrect screw, and either need to get the correct lenght screw or just have to shorten the one you have by 5/8". |
| I am having the same problem with my Stag arms lower and Stag model 4HL upper. Don't forget to lube and clean the mags as well, my mags were brand new and once i cleaned them well I had a lot less problems! still breaking it in though and i still get an empty chamber every once in a while but the problem is diminishing. I also cycled the bolt several times over, then cleaned it and lubed it and did it again to help break it in! Once you break it in I am sure this problem will diminish, Good luck! |

You’ll probably get an ear full about Wolf ammo. If it were my rifle, I would clean it thoroughly (chamber brush) the whole nine yards and try some Federal American Eagle or, if you’re lucky enough to get some, Federal XM193 ammo. This could be a quick answer to this problem. A clean chamber and higher quality ammo could do the trick.
I wouldn't worry too much about this yet. And, I sure wouldn't get rid of the wolf. It could be something else . . . like the buffer and spring set. Use proper buffer and spring (all stock) to eliminate other possible variables. |

Thanks for the advice everyone.
I checked the buttstock screw and confirmed I was using the right one. I'm begining to believe that it is a mag issue. I was cycling some snap caps and it looks like the tips of the rounds are dipping. I just ordered some anti tilt followers to see if it will help. I'm gonna stop at the gun shop and try to pick up some decent ammo. |

Don't rule out not correctly cleaning and lubing the rifle as well.
If not in a correctly cleaned and lubed state, the rifle will semi short stroke, which translates to a less than stellar impact of the buffer off the back of the receiver extension to help the mag recover correctly to prevent the load feeds of the rounds out of a working mag. |
| What magazine were you using and did you try a different one? I believe the magazine is supposed to trigger a switch to lock the bolt back when it is empty, but ONLY when it is empty. Could be a problem with the mag, the magwell, or the compatibility between the two. I would try a friend's mag and see if that fixes it. |
| Since I live in NY, I don't have many choices for 30 round mags. I have 2 Labelle and 2 really weird Eagle plastic mags with a roll up spring from the top. I tried all of them and they all lock back after the last round. None of the mags have anti-tilt followers and the eagle mags can't be changed. Unfortunately I don't know anyone in my area that has an AR. Next time I go to the range, hopefully I can ask some people because I have seen a couple of people with them there. |
