This is my first build, (and First AR). I just got my upper that i purchased used over the internet. my problem is that the bolt does not go all the way back in. I think it was in when i first opened everything up. (was very excited it finally arrived). I was looking at the bolt and it appears that there are some burs on the carrier key. could that not cause the bolt to go all the way in?

Thanks in advance,

do you mean the bolt does not go back into the carrier, or the bolt carrier assembly will not go all the way into the upper receiver?

If it is the whole bolt carrier assembly, make sure the bolt is all the way foward before trying to slide the assembly into the receiver. That way the locking lugs are in line.

Yes I do mean the whole bolt/carrier assembly. The bolt is forward but when I try to slide it all the way in, about half an inch of the carrier is still sticking out the back of the upper.

Are the burrs you refer to near the hex head screws? If so that is supposed to be there.  The carrier screws are staked so they don't work out.

no, it is where the gas rod? goes into the carrier key. I'll try to load a pic in the AM.

I couldn't get the camera to work but, I took the carrier key off to see if the bolt would go all the way in without it and it does. So my guess is that the burs on the key that i was talking about are not allowing the bolt to move all the way forward.

The bolt should just slide all the way forward without any force having to be applied to it right?

You took the key off? Make sure you stake that thing properly when you put it back together.

You should feel some friction or resistance when the carrier assembly attempts to close the last 1/2 or so.

You didn't drop your carrier assembly and possibly dent the key?

Va-gunnut may be on to something with an off kilter key.  I HIGHLY doubt the burrs from staking was the issue.  When you put the key back on use loctite and stake it real good again.

ETA: check out these pictures of carrier staking: www.ar15armory.com/forums/AR-carrier-key-staking-pics-t19144.html  This is normal staking and will not cause the issues you describe.

No, I havent droped it or anything like that. I'm thinking it was like that when I got it. I think i'll try replacing the key with a new one. If that does not work then i'll just have to find a local gunsmith... And thanks for the information on how to properly stake the key.
