A guy that I work with has an Ar-15 that he has monkied around with.  He told me that the rifle will cycle fine with the stock collapsed but not with it closed.  What could cause this?  He thought it was the buffer that was to long.  I explained to him that the Buffer tube does not actually collapse the stock slide on the tube. Closing it should not effect the cycle of the gun at all correct?  Help please.

Closing the stock should make no difference on the cycling unless he is not holding it tight to his shoulder (and there are other problems).  Kinda like "limp wristing" it.

He is saying the bollt can not be pulled back far enough to pick up a round from the magazine.  Does not do this with stock extended, it does with it closed.  I do not see how this can be related.

What carbine butt stock system?

Charging handle is hitting the stock when loading a round manually. That would explain his problem.

That would be my guess as well.

+1, I've seen this on a buddy's gun as well.

I talked to him and yes this what is happening.  Does he have it screwed in to far?

No, it's [the buttstock] just a bit tall. Take a bit of material off the top of it the length of the charging handle pullout length.

The stock has to be screwed in enough to hold the spring retainer in, if it's at that point then backing it out or in a bit will cause different issues.

I'd bet he'll have to take off very little for it to work, do NOT take it off the charging handle tho, take it off the sliding buttstock and check the work with it at it's shortest position.

I got ya.  Yeah I should have known about the screwing it in to far question.  I am no expert but know enough to know better than that

Taken from the forum manual. I'm sure someome here can supply pictures if you need 'em but it's pretty straight forward. Good luck

TELESCOPING STOCK

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PARTS: takedown pin, takedown pin spring, takedown pin detent, telescoping stock, buffer extension, backplate, locking ring, retainer, retainer spring, buffer spring, buffer

TOOLS: Telescoping Stock Wrench

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Insert retainer spring and retainer into recess in lower.
Install buffer tube, backplate, and locking ring onto receiver and depress retainer when necessary to get it to rest under the extension tube. Turn tube until it is about 1/4 turn past the correct location.
Install takedown pin with groove to the rear and install detent and spring from the rear of the receiver.
Backplate will now hold spring in place when you turn the extension tube back 1/4 turn.
Tighten locking ring using telestock wrench for a snug fit.
With the hammer down, insert buffer spring and buffer into buffer tube until retainer snaps up to lock it in place.
Function check takedown pin, stock, and buffer retainer.
