One of my AR's has developed a Short Stroking problem. It will fire a round, eject, bolt will close but will not chamber the next round. I have tried many different types of ammo, mags, changed the entire bolt assembly, checked and cleaned the gas tube, changed buffer and spring. No luck still SS. As a side note bolt assembly worked in one of the other rifles and swapped bolt did not work in problem rifle. So I assume I can rule out the BA. Everything I've tried did not solve my problem. Also bolt will not lock back on last round fired but will manually and I feel no resistance when pulling the Charging Handle back. I'm Lost! Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks. |

When was the last time that the barrel was chamber brush detailed cleaned? Ammo being used? Gas tube and FSB CLP fluid tested to confirm flow from the end of the tube inside the receiver all the way to the bore through the FSB. (read to determine if the FSB passage/ barrel gas port are not blocked? |
| Rifle is completely cleaned after each use. As stated earlier CLP was sprayed through gas tube and it did flow out from under the FSB. As far as ammo I have tried many different brands. All with the same results. I have done everything "I" know of to correct this problem. Well the only thing I haven't done is remove the FSB to check the hole in the barrel to See if it's clogged but with the CLP flowing through I don't think that is my problem. Any suggestions? I'm about to give up and send it to Bushmaster. |

Just to keep those who may be interested. I ended up sending the rifle to Bushmaster. They "opened the gas port, sealed gas block and tube, exchanged gas key". Rifle fired well for 125 rounds. Started short stroking again. Went through all the possible problem areas. Called Bushmaster they said send it back. Here I go again! Anyone have any ideas on whats going on? |

Just to keep anyone interested up-dated. Took this rifle back out to the range one last time before sending it back to Bushmaster. The last time there constant Short Stroking. Thought I tried everything. This time before going I stopped at the local gun shop and bought some "Higher Quality Ammo". Not my standard Wolf, or surplus. Fired perfectly. Not 1 SS or any other problem. Fired 100 rds. Now I have been shooting Wolf for years and really can't say it's bad. But this particular rifle likes the good stuff. I have several others so if when I use this rifle I buy the good stuff. Suming it up it was the AMMO! |

I had the same problem on two M-4's that I built myself from completely stripped parts. I however had used two LaRue low profile gas blocks, after hacking off the factory front site bases. In the end, the real problem was an improper amount of lube on the bolt, carrier, and upper, not enough that is. I was getting light strikes on cartridges, failure to feed, frequent jams, and was only getting off 1 shot in like 15.. Lubing the hell out of my brand new bolts fixed both the problems. As a note, I tried several types of ammo, different magazines, swaped whole bolt/carrier groups, questioned weather or not I screwed up the gas block and tube...and finally ruined my brain trying to figure out head spacing. My bolts in both weapons were super thirsty drinking up a lot of clp until they finally formed a "permanent" lubrication layer. Hope ya get her figured out... |

If I was a betting man, I would say it's actually as simple as tightening down your two allen screws that hold down the bolt carrier key down to the bolt carrier and re-staking them. Over 90% of the bushy's I hear about(including mine) shortstroking is caused by bushmaster simple not staking down the carrier key correctly and one or both screws start to come loose in turn making you loose gas pressure. I can't believe bushmaster is STILL letting rifles go with this problem. |
There's already a horse in another thread getting beaten to death ![]() OP: Has the Wolf you've been using since the problems started been from the same lot? Also, if you're looking for cheap ammo, you should look into Silver Bear or Brown Bear ammo. It's supposedly hotter and cleaner then Wolf. |
