Hey guys I'm fairly new to the AR community. I know how the thing opperates but I am at a loss with my problem. I have a fairly new and used S&W M&P-15T. I have been putting lots of Wolf .223 through it. Thing is after about 2 rounds per mag I would get a spent case stuck in the chamber. I spoke with an "operator" friend and he suggested I replace the extractor claw. So I did and the gun seemed to run a lot better. Now I'm running into double feeding issues. The spent case is not fully extracted and the bolt tries to drive a fresh round into the chamber. I don't have a clue what's going on. Can anyone help!? |

Dropped extraction = fired case starts to be withdrawn from chamber but (for variety of possible reasons) extractor hook fails to hang onto case. Momentum carries empty back with carrier but, obviously, it will not eject. Carrier tries to feed next round resulting in "double feed" jam. Not uncommon with: carbine gas system, dirty chamber, rough chamber, overgassed conditions. Get a chamber brush - use it after every session, especially with dirty ammo, and/or new gun. New chamber may be a bit rough, which only aggravates accumulation of crud. Sometimes very mild abrasive (oil soaked emery cloth wrapped on a brush) will do it. Do not get too aggressive. When you installed a new extractor you went just halfway. Did you change out the spring/insert? Might want to add a D or O ring. Alternatively, go with a Wolff XP extractor spring. Sam |
First off, Welcome to the site!!!! Now lets down to business. To remove the stuck spent case, pull the butt stock lever down (the entire lever, and not just cam'd to one side) and pull the butt stock off the back of the receiver extension. Now with the rifle empty, pull down on the charging handle while giving the back of the receiver extension a hard downward blow off the ground (grass or carpet area). This will either extract the spent case when the bolt unlocks, or at least get the bolt unlocked. If the latter, lock the bolt back on the bolt catch, insert single steel one piece cleaning rod down the muzzle, bottom it out on the web of the spent case, and give the handle of the cleaning rod a good whack (hard palm blow) to clear the case. Now onto the spent case in the action problem, just add a #60 O-ring (a dime at any hardware store) around the extractor spring to give the extractor more tension. Once the chamber breaks in (and the next part that I am going to type) this will deal with the problem you are now having. Wolf ammo, let face facts, it burns dirty, and leaves powderized poly fouling in the chamber and action (case being scrapped, and not the poly being burnt off). To fight this, you will need to run the upper bearing areas of the upper well lubed. By how well lubed, pull the B/C, spray it down with BreakfreeCLP (inside and out), give it a quick flick, and put it back into the rifle. Around every 200 rounds, pull the B/C and relube it again (don't need to clean anything, just relube). Granted this is not a solve all for Wolf coated ammo, but if pay attention to the stroke of the rifle (ejections start to go weak or cycling problems), you should be fine (know when to relube) and only have a spent case stick in the chamber maybe every 1k of ammo or less (read never go shooting with out a cleaning rod when shooting wolf ammo in a commercial barrel). |

Wow so ironically tonight I sprayed a whole heap of Remoil down the barrel and around the base of the case (haha thats funny) expecting to whale on the new steal cleaning rod and with barely a tap the shell flies out and dinks across the floor! SWEET! Now the embarrassing part. I think the issue was that I was not cleaning the chamber well enough. I was using a brush a bit smaller than the diameter of the chamber threaded to asoft metal wire for grip. SO I put a bigger brush on the steal rod and went to town. BIG DIFFERENCE. so I finished the rest of the cleaning chores and I have high hopes that with proper cleaning and AMERICAN ammo she will run fine. I gave the bore a good look over and I don't think its ruined. Praise the Lord! Thanks for your insight guys. I really appreciate it. I'll let yall know how it works out at the rang later this week. |

Pick up a M-16 chamber brush, instead of just using a 30 and 25 cal units to clean the chamber. Better yet, pick up a butt stock cleaning kit ($15) that you can throw in your range bag just encase you ever need to do a down and dirty cleaning in the field (kit will have a chamber brush in it). Also, copper/lead fouling bore cleaners, and even CLP will not remove poly fouling. For this, you have to scrub it out, and since a 30 cal brush is not tapered correctly for the neck of the chamber, and a 25 is too small to hit the shoulder areas, you just end up making a mess of the cleaning (read half-ass completed with fouling still in the chamber). |
