In the ar-15  world !
In the military a2 and a3 are both fixed carry handles. A4's are flat tops.
M16 A2  are designed to fire semi and burst.
M16 a3  are made to  fire semi and auto !

Oh Damn, i keep forgetting the "get technical" aspect of this forum.

Colt is correct on the Military designations. I will also say that Colt (the rifle manufacturer) is the only brand that actually uses the A3 designation at all. That rifle is flat topped, so usually, if you go into a gun shop and ask to see an AR15A3, they will most likely show you a flat top, carbine or ask if you mean A4, then show you a flat top rifle.

 In short, unless you are talking FA or Burst, use A2 for fixed CH, and A4 for flat top.

 Colt.....................is that better.
