I'v got a bushmaster tax time upper that bends the snot out of my ejected shell case mouth.

I reload so it matters.   I've only got about 300 rounds down the pipes but almost all eject with a heavy bend in the spent case mouth.

Instead of coming out round my case mouths come out looking like a "D".   It's gonna beat the hell out of my brass.

Any thoughts on what would cause this?

Since the sizer button/die will resolve the problem at sizing, it's really a non-issue.

But to make you feel better with a solution, install a strip of sticky back Velcro on the deflector to lessen the blow to the spent case off of it (the cloth side, not the nook side).

Is that what it's from??

The brass is flipping all the way around and hitting the deflector with the case mouth.  It's my 1st AR so it's all new to me.

Do all AR's do this?

True the expander ball takes it right out, I'm just trying to understand why it happens and lessen the beating on my brass.

My ARs do the same to my brass as well. Non issue as far as I know....

What I have done to help this is to put a small piece of black electrical tape on the case deflector. Hardly notice it on there and it does help keep the neck dings down a bit it seems.

shorten the ejector spring by a coil at a time, you will be able to get it brass to miss the deflector entirely

Trimming the ejector spring is more of a match rifle tweak than a service rifle one since the match rifles are often only feed specific loads.

The problem is at some point the clipped extractor spring is going to go south (read much faster than that of an unclipped unit), and the spent cases will not even clear the ejection port when being ejected.  By clipping the spring, you are causing the ejection of the spent case to be off the bolt face at forward stroke and not the rearward stall, with issues becoming even more a real problem when weak type ammo is used at a later date if the spring was set for stronger Nato/full power type of round (weaker stoke and the spent case ejected off the bolt face more father forward in the forward stroke with the case of the cases just being shoved into the front of the ejection port lip).

I'm not going to touch it till I find a load the gun likes.  As of right now my AR has been pretty much a single shot.  It constantly short strokes although I think it is ammo related.

It will eject the spent case but rarely picks up a fresh round.

Being a reloader for over 15 years I hate buying factory ammo.  I used some powder I had laying around for my 1st batch of ammo.  VV N130 pushing 55 grn pulled bullets.

I'm thinking the powder is a little fast.  I picked up some tac and VV135 and VV 540.  I'll get a good load out of these. Looking to make it with tac as a plinking load. then do some match ammo from the VV.

Even though this gun is not 100% BRD has gotten hold of me. I bought a 3 pack of stripped lowers and am already looking at building #2.
