[ARCHIVED THREAD] - New Timney Trigger Problem (Page 1 of 2)

I installed my Timney trigger last week and it shot fine with no problems, broke really nicely, no creep, reduced my groups and what have you. Now today at the range, about 50 or shot shots into the session the trigger starts to do something weird. I squeeze off a shot and then go for the second and I get nothing. The hammer doesn't even fall. It has some play in the trigger but nothing. If I keep on messing with the trigger it feels like the disconnector finally resets and I am able to fire again. If I recharge the gun, it usually fixes the problem but not always. That got old fast so I decide to pop open the AR to have a look to see if something is visually wrong. Nothing. I seem to remeber that some people were having problems and had to retighten the set screws down. So I do the same. They were really tight already as I was aware of this when I installed the trigger. Put it back together and I was in business once again - or so I thought. After another 10-12 rounds the gun will go back to doing the same thing. Once again I break it open to readjust the screws and back at it again. I have heard of people double tapping with their Timney's but not this problem yet. I tried to give Timney a call but no one answered and it was even a miracle just to get through the lines as it had a busy signal most of the day and everyone VM was full. Has anyone else experienced this yet? I really like this trigger and was wondering if it was something I was doing wrong or is it a warranty issue I should take up with Timney? |

I found the EXACT same strangeness in mine yesterday. Just bought it new from a board memeber here a few days ago. Installed it, function checked fine, test fired fine. Then at the range yesterday, pulled maybe 6 shots OK, then nothing. No double taps as some have written here, just not releasing for subsequent shots. Took it back out, reset the screws with blue loctite...same behavior. I did find after playing with it for a bit that cycling the safety on then off enabled the next shot to be fired. What a pain though to cycle the safety between every shot. What a shame too as I really like the feel of this trigger. Sent Timney a note and will be calling today for some guidance on this. I'd be cureious if cycling the safety helps your issue as well. ETA: Sent back w/delivery confirmation, recieved by Timney on 3/19/07. Still awaiting trigger and/or response to emails and/or IMs. |
| I found that out too if you mess with the safety selector switch it resets the trigger. I did my usual cleaning yesterday and took the lower apart and I couldn't find anything wrong. Now the trigger feels fine after a bunch of dry fire drills. I think something is coming out of spec when it's under live fire. |
The first day i had mine installed shot like a dream with no issues at all, went to shoot it yesterday and would get 1-2 shots off and then have the same problem, checked the set screws also and they were tight, i didnt fiddle with the safety though just cleared the round. Man i hope i hope this can be fixed![]() Doug |
| Took it out today and it ran without a single problem. Let a couple of friends shoot it and they all said the same thing. Best trigger on any gun they have ever shot. The first shot surprised all of them. I need to put a trigger gauge on this one. There is no way this is set at 3lbs. My XD is set at 2 lbs and the Timney is by far much lighter. |
| Not to my knowledge. I ran it though it's paces again on Sunday and no problems. The only thing I could think of is that the screws are not as tight as before, but they are still very tight none the less. I am really not too sure on why it's working now kinda odd. |
| We have run into double tap problems that a redesign in engagement angles seems to have fixed (seems to because we've tested it on a limited number of lowers). The double tap problem may have been caused by the trigger not fully engaging with the hammer every time so we changed the angles to allow for a dovetail lock between the trigger and hammer. This change could also relieve the problem you're experiencing but there's no way to tell without trying it on your particulat rifle. Please send the trigger back; we'll send you the redigned unit. We tested the trigger on literally dozens or rifles and ran tens of thousands of rounds before introducing it but we're tweeking it as different situations arise. I'm real sorry for this and we'll make it right. |
I have one that hasnt been used cept for a few dry pulls as freinds want to see what it feel slike, should I run mine or should it be returned? thanks for showing up in the thread. |

Thats all I need to know, I will keep her unless I have problems. Do you recommend any special cleaning for the unit or do you have a round count that it should be removed for a gun scrubber type cleaning, (mine didnt come in a box or with directions) Thanks again. |

I bought 2 of these through Brownell's. One of them didn't work from the start. In checking it before installation the trigger did just as described above. The disconnector wouldn't release the hammer when the trigger was released. I went ahead and installed it, just to see if it would work when properly installed. It didn't. So, I dressed the engagement surfaces. That fixed the problem, but created another one in that the hammer fell all the way, missing the sear, when the trigger was released. I sent it back to Brownell's for replacement. The second trigger seems to work fine. It is SO good that I'm afraid that after a little wear it may cease to function. Time will tell. Another problem I found with both of my Timney triggers is that the trigger pin holes don't precisely line up with the holes in my receivers. Close enough that the pin could be driven in, though. But then the hammer pin just falls through and is not retained, even after tightening the 2 alan screws. I like to use the non-rotating captive pins anyway, so that isn't really a problem for me. But still, that isn't as advertised. I hope they get the problems fixed, because these triggers have the best trigger pull I've seen on an AR. It's good to see that the Timney folks are here and actively working to make their product better. I just wish I could talk to someone when I call. |
I think people are missing this important fact:
Maybe to put that into context, maybe Timney can tell us how many of these triggers have been sold? I think that the readers of Arfcom put way too much weight into what they READ here as opposed to what they DON'T READ here (because it's not being posted). Remember that most happy customers never say a thing, while most unhappy customers go to the end of the earth to get their message heard. I have heard it said that 1 unhappy customer offsets 30-50 happy customers. Put another way, just because you hear about a problem from 5 different people, that does not mean that every one of those same products ever sold has a problem. If there are 50,000 of those products sold and only 5 people talking about problems, the manufacturer is doing pretty good. Now if there were only 25 sold and there are still 5 people talking about problems, then you had better be careful. |
| I sent mine back to "Jason" 3 weeks ago. They do not answer their phones or emails. I'm starting to get concerned and annoyed. I even tried [email protected] and it gets kicked back as not a valid address. Does anybody have suggestions? |
|
| I tried twice to IM "Timney" with no reply. Called Timney Mfg. office both Toll free and Direct several times no answer and every voicemail box is full. It has been 3 weeks now no answer or reply to emails or IM. I WOULD NOT SEND YOUR TRIGGER or you will be pissed off like me!!! |
I'm staying hopeful that my replacement trigger is on the way. I sent mine on March 16th. Status: Delivered Your item was delivered at 9:39 AM on March 19, 2007 in PHOENIX, AZ 85019. |

No disrespect to the moderator who locked this thread, but why would this be locked? Several members note a problem, all of them also noting a complete and total lack of response on the part of Timney. To us other potential consumers, we would like to hear more about whether more people are experiencing this same phenomenon and are also able to reach Timney for resolution. We as consumers can understand that there might be a small percentage of funky units, but how the manufacturer responds to the situation is as equally important, and a full mailbox, unanswered calls/emails, and month-long "Where's the unit I sent you?" stories don't bode well for them. |
