Switched the stock on my AR from a fixed M4 style "postban" stock to an A2 stock that I bought from the EE, and now whenever I fire my rifle, it will vibrate kinda badly on the return.

It seems to be ok while the buffer and spring are being cycled back, but when they start to cycle forward, it while vibrate and shimmy pretty bad, I can definitely feel it and hear it also when it does this.

Are the buffers different lengths between the A2 stock and postban M4 stocks? The buffer I received with the A2 stock is the same length, and I'm not sure if they're supposed to be or not. Sorry if I'm way off here, but it's the only thing I can think of at the moment.

Anyone who has experienced this problem, or that has any input on a solution would be greatly appreciated!

P.S.- I hope this post makes sense!

The sprong noise is normal, and with your check now firmly resting against the stock, so is the vibration that your feeling (mostly).

What you may want to do is pull the recoil spring and check the end of coils winds for end burs that may be dragging down the receiver extension, and cause extra noise/vibration.

some of the postban stocks used the A2 buffer assembly and some didnt. A collapsible stock, a real one, uses a shorter spring and a lighter/shorter buffer. The M4 buffer assy will not work in a A2 stock and the A2 buffer will not work in a M4 stock. If your buffer doesnt look like the one in the link you have the wrong buffer.

Hmmmmmmm.................Just took the buffer out and measured it, it's about 6 inches long. It's doesn't seem to be the shorter buffer, because I dug my real collapsible stock out and compared the two, and the buffer on the collapsible stock is much shorter.

It seems odd too, I didn't have any problems with my postban M4 stock, and now this.

It's definitely not the normal sproing either, I'm used to that, this vibrates the entire rifle, it just does it on the return cycle.

Now back to more confusion........

I swapped my A2 stock for an ARFX.  I'm getting the same vibration--I can feel it in the cheekweld, pistol grip and vertical grip.  It feels weird, but it's nothing to worry about.

(I figure my rifle is just purring--it must be happy with all the bling)

Normal, your cheek is up against the tube and not insulated by the thick plastic A2 stock.  I grease the hell out of the recoil spring with plain old axle grease from the auto parts store, just goop it on there, you will not believe the difference.  It is quiet, smooth, and the gun runs smooth as butter.  I have never had a problem with the grease getting dirty or causing any problems, it just makes the gun run sweet.  P.S. some might ooze out the drain hole in the back of the stock, so shoot it for the first time with an old shirt on, or a rag at the ready.

Thank's for all the suggestions guys, I found a tube of Tetra grease in the gun box, lubed up the spring with that, and it ran much better. Now it's back to the feeling that I'm used to!

Thanks for all the quick replies, this forum is great!

The new 6 position stocks come with parts to allow for the collapsed position - buffer and spring. You probabaly have a case of tolerance difference. Remember lube is a dirt magnet - however it may sand down your chamber quickly and eliminate your initial problem.
