I shot my Bushmaster V-Match .223 upper yesterday. When inspecting the fired cases, they were sooty, from the neck to about midway down the case.

This happened with both handloads and factory (IMI) loads.

Feeding and extraction/ejection were fine, and accuracy was excellent.

The fellow next to me was shooting an H&K G36, and his ejected cases were spotlessly clean.

Do I have a problem, or is this normal? Chamber out of spec?  Timing issue?  Gas system problem?  What should I check?  Should I just ship it back to Bushmaster?

I do not recall this happening with either my Bushmaster A3 or Rock River Arms uppers.

I have the same problem on a new bushmaster varminter.  I am curious to see what if anything can be done (or should be done) about the sooty cases.  I would think that it indicates that the brass is not properly expanding to seal the chamber from blow-back gases around the brass.

I would have sworn I answered this but the post isn't here.

warddc hit it, for whatever reason the case is not expanding enough to grip the chamber walls. If it's happening with a variety of loads, including factory ammo, then the problem most likely lies in the chamber. Will be caused by overly large chamber, undersized brass, or low pressure loads.

That is the first thing that occurred to me, but a V-Match isn't supposed to have an oversized chamber.

Here is BFI's reply:
"It is not unusual that the forward section of the cases are sooty. The amount will vary depending on ammunition being used.
           Thank you,

I suppose I'll give the chamber a really thorough cleaning, and try it again.  The fact that the rig is accurate is the only thing keeping me from shipping it back to BFI.
