I am having a heck of a time trying to break loose the screw that is in my A2 stock (it hasn't been removed previously).  I have soaked it with WD-40 and assaulted it with a barrage of flat head screw drivers to no avail.  Unfortunately, I have slightly damaged (read beginning stages of stripping) the groove with a combination of screw driver slippage and torquing (to the point the metal slightly bent).  hing
(On the plus side A1 stock on it's way with screw, just have to get this baby out)

Try a better fitting concave (gunsmith's) grind screwdriver. Only thing that should be holding the screw in is a drop of low strenght threadlocker. You might be dealing with some motivated individual that used high strength LocTite.

I suppose that's possible, however I did buy the rifle new...

Find the widest thickest blade that will fit the slot with full contact. It being new the odds of high strength threadlocker being used are slim but not improbable.

Difficult, at best, to do with the plastic stock attached.

I have found the stuck screws easier to remove with the stock firmly clamped in a padded vice or such.  That way I can use both hands, and a wrench on the screwdriver if extra ugh is needed.

Try Liquid Wrench--from the auto store--or better yet Kroil if you can find it. Maybe Home Depot has it but not sure. I ordered mine and wouldn't be without it. Let it sit awhile for it to work. And as someone else said, don't use a mechanic type screwdriver, use one specially ground for guns. Their flat sides don't kill screws like regular ones.

Where do we get these "gunsmith's" screwdrivers?

Look for "hollow ground"
