I've got an upper that's been dedicated to .22 for awhile, I put a new charging handle on it recently. I've noticed that where the latch on the charging handle hits the back of the upper when it goes into battery seems to be wearing the metal of the upper away pretty fast. There's a fairly alarming gouge there now. Could the latch on this charging handle be way too stiff, or it this considered normal wear and tear?

Could be that the latch edge has a bur that is causing the damage.

My guess is that you got the charging handle as a complete unit, and didn't take the time to clean up the retaining latch.

The charging handle is only four pieces, handle-latch-spring-roll pin.

Just punch out the roll pin and  pull the latch, then take a stone to the lever claw to remove the burs and soften the edges.
