I recently bought a preban PWA lower which came with a four-position collapsible stock.  I was sighting it in yesterday when the bolt carrier failed to return to battery.

When I disassembled the rifle, I found the buffer retainer and spring under the hammer, and the buffer and buffer spring just popped out.

The buffer tube in the proper indexed position is just a bit short to hold the retainer under firing conditions.  When I rotate it forward to hold the buffer retainer (and still be indexed), the tube is now too long by 1/16" and prevents the upper from closing.

I guess I need to remove a bit of metal from the front of the buffer tube - can I just file to fit?  Do I need to refinish the bare aluminum (I have some Norrell's flat black moly resin)?

Thanks,
Gabe

If you're really bothered by the bare aluminum, pick up a can of Aluma-Hyde. It does a pretty good job.  There's always a black Sharpie marker.

gman,

This is a common problem with cheap rifles/stocks.

While I'm certain it's a matter of the collapsible stock being poorly made the first check is of the buffer detent pin hole location. It should be .565" +/- .002" from the back of the lower to the center of the pin hole. As the hole is angled try to hold onto just the lip of it.

If that dim is reasonably good then you have to look at the stock, assuming that the threads are timed as they should be. File off everything that impinges on the upper receiver then refinish it with your favorite method of Al coating.

You could save yourself some future troubles with this part and buy a Colt collapsible, they're expensive but all the rest are just lame knockoffs.
