I several bolt carrier groups from Brownells with bolts in 9310 steel.
One carrier group has a bolt in Carpenter 158 steel. Is there a way to differentiate the two steels? Thanks |
| If you don't have the proper stuff, you are not going to ID the metal used in the BCG, and being honest there is really no reason to worry about it, when I buy BCG's what it is made out of is the least of my concerns, especially if you are buying from a reputable company. |

Send them to a laboratory that does non-destructive testing. OR....ask the manufacturers to provide the material certifications when they bought the material they made the bolt from. That's it. _ Quoted:

Because. _ Now you sound like my kids when they were growing up and I asked them why they did something.. I don't know or Because! Children say "why".....adults say "because". And regarding the answer I posted for the OP.... He asked what I considered a metallurgical question. I gave him 2 valid ways to help him get answers his questions. One is easy to do...one is expensive and time consuming. But somehow, you either missed that, or don't understand it. Don't fear or be scared of what you don't understand. _ |

It would seem that you have it backwards.... Children say "why".....adults say "because". And regarding the answer I posted for the OP.... He asked what I considered a metallurgical question.
