Hello all. I have an AXTS AX556 lower that I'm using to build a "pistol" receiver on which I plan to use a PWS Mod 2 Enhanced Buffer Tube and endplate and a JP Enterprises Silent Captured Spring assembly.
The uppers I'd like to use on this lower are an 8.5" pistol length gas system .300 BLK (both subs and supers), a 10.5" carbine length 5.56, and (simply out of curiosity) a 17.5" intermediate length 5.56, all (mostly) suppressed and unsuppressed. I figure the ability to easily swap buffer weights should allow for use of any particular upper and lower combination but my main question is due to my inexperience with intermediate length gas systems. I know buffer weight is primarily the determining factor of whether or not the "rifle?" will cycle properly, and I know a carbine length buffer tube will cycle both pistol and carbine length gas systems, but I'm not so sure about the intermediate gas system. Does anyone have any experience using these two in combination and more importantly do you think there are any other things I may be overlooking that would inhibit proper function with the parts I'm planning to use? Thanks. |

All of my lowers are set up the same way. I use adjustable gas blocks to set up each upper for properly gassed function suppressed or unsuppressed on the standard carbine lowers.
Pistol length 300BLK is the only one you mention that doesn't benefit (much) from an adjustable block. The 10.5" 5.56 will benefit the most. |

I probably should've mentioned that all of the uppers are also made by Radian Weapons, formerly AXTS, and do not have adjustable gas blocks nor do I believe they can be changed. However, I will have separate NFA lowers (currently in NFA jail) for both short barreled uppers as they were purchased as complete SBRs and each will have their own JP SCS assemblies. I guess if I were to experience any cyclical issues with the "pistol" lower I could just swap the SCS assemblies from the corresponding uppers' NFA lower into the "pistol" lower for a quick change in buffer weight.
I haven't bought the 17.5" upper yet and I was just wondering if I'd experience any issues using it on the pistol receiver with a carbine length buffer tube, or if I should just build or buy a separate lower for it altogether. I've never owned a 5.56 upper with a barrel length of more than 16" so definitely not an intermediate length gas system. My current 5.56s are carbine length and the only AR platform I own with a barrel length greater than 16" is a 20" .308 with an adjustable gas block so that's not really comparable. But, if you reliably run mid-length and intermediate gas systems with your carbine buffer then I guess that's all I needed to know. Thanks! |
