| First post here. Looking for feed back on where I can obtain an unfinished upper kit to go along with my 80% lower build. I would like to get an 18" barrel and most likely a keymod style hand guard. I want to cerakote both pieces but I have yet to see a non anodized hand guard and I dont want to have to sand blast before coating. Any advice will be appreciated. |

I've seen raw uppers in the past, but can't remember where. Once I look at the price, and compare them to a finished stripped upper, I don't think it's worth it.
I just did a quick google search on raw uppers, and I'm seeing them at $40-$60 area. I usually try to pay $40-$50 for my stripped uppers. Don't know what to say on the handguards. But, regardless what you do, you're going to have to treat the surface before you coat. Media blasting should not be necessary, but you will need to create a decent anchor pattern with sandpaper and scrub pads, and de-grease everything as well. Even if your upper and handguard were uncoated, you should still do it. Most shops media blast because it's the most efficient and consistent way to get a decent anchor profile for coating. For most of us home shop guys, patience and the scrub pad are the way to go. |

They also sell Matrix Arms raw handguards. I ordered a Matrix Foxtrot for my 9mm pistol build. I was thinking get the raw parts and have them all anodized at the same time for my 80% build. Raw uppers as well. If you leave a note in the comment section during checkout, we will blast any rail that you purchase from our store. http://www.righttobear.com/AR15-80-Lower-Receiver-Cerro-Forge-s/1855.htm |

You've got options. I didn't realize RTB would blast it for you when you order it. You will probably just need to de-grease it before spraying it if you go that route.
Also nothing wrong with prepping it yourself. The unfortunate side of any kind of coating or painting is that 90% of your effort goes into preparing the surface, and most people that look at it can't appreciate the beforehand efforts. You should be good either way, though. Also, you can find stripped uppers, handguards, and barrels fairly cheap right now. You could just slap together something for practice if you have enough cash to spare. Even if it's not perfect, you should be able to sell it off if you don't like it. Barrel: $85-100 Handguard: $50-65 Stripped upper: $40-50 Upper kit: $15 Gas block and tube: $25 So, $235 for a test upper at the low end. Might take some scratching, but it's doable. |
