Hi everybody, Mchael here,
Recently I bought an AR15 copy from Schmeisser, the AR15 M5-F KeyMod, which has a MilSpec Lower and Upper according to the manufacturer but has a free floated barrel. There is also the so called Schmeisser AR15 M5, which is identical to the M5-F but the M5 is actually an M4 carbine with a longer barrel. It was the M5 that I actually wanted to buy but non of the official dealers in the EU had an M5 in stock and non of them can deliver one for at least 3-5months or maybe longer. So I decided not to wait for that long and to buy the an M5F which was in stock at my dealer. The plan is to "undo" the free float / Keymod and rebuild the rifle to become an M5/M4 with the A2 front sights and a flat top. So actually I only want the remove the free floated gasblock and the KeyMod hand guard and exchange it for a shorter and thicker (M4 style? ) hand guard with or without picatinny rail and also install an A2 front sight. So what I would like to do is undo the free float job they did on it. My dealer says that it shouldn't be a problem since the M5F is identically to an M5. But before I begin making these mods. I need the clarify the following: Questions: do I need a specific barrel nut that goes with a specific hand guard? is there a A2 frontsight/gasblock model that doesn't need drilling holes in the side of the barrel for the fixing pins of the front sight? Is there anything else the I need to observe when doing this mod. ? Thanks people, appreciate all the help I can get! Michael Specs of my model: SCHMEISSER AR15 M5-F KeyMod Slim line KeyMod (Free Flute) with Picatinny rail, Low profile gas block, Kaliber: .223Rem. / 5.56 Nato. Barrel length: 16,75“ (425mm) Overall length: 939mm (but stock extended), 842mm wenn collapsed Weight: 3.570 Gramm Frame: forged aluminium 7075 T6 , hard anodized |

It sounds like you want to use standard plastic carbine fore-grips. In that case you will need a standard mil-spec barrel but with delta ring and spring assembly. You will also need the appropriate hand guard front cap, which goes between the gas block and the plastic hand guard. You are also correct in that you will need a new A2 style front sight/gas block. There are versions of these that don't require drilling and pinning, however, since you're using the standard hand guards as well, the only thing that holds those hand guards in place is the fixture of the gas block, so you will seriously want to consider going with a pinned gas block, otherwise it will be very likely that the gas block will come loose over time. |

Fulton Armory makes a set screw version of the front sight block http://www.fulton-armory.com/frontsightbaseforgedpowerwedgewsetscrewswbayolug.aspx
Other items you will need are the round end cap to retain the hand guards, the right barrel nut, delta ring, weld spring, and barrel nut snap ring. |
