I just purchased this: https://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-16-mid-length-5-56-1-7-premium-rifle-kit.html
My question is this: Anyone have experience with this upper pairing with a stripped lower from say, Anderson, or Spikes, etc? How well do they fit together? My concern is this: I have seen mis-matched, and even same-brand uppers and lowers fit together like one was metric and the other imperial. Huge gaps you could see through, and flex that belongs in a yoga studio. Does anyone have a solid, experienced based recommendation for a lower that will fit tight and clean? Or am I blowing this out of proportion, like it's super rare to have mil-spec not fit together well? Thanks, TAR |
| It wouldn't be out of the ordinary to see an upper and lower of the same brand not fit together perfectly. It is really hard to say until you actually mate them together. You may find some people that say it fits great and others may not have had such good luck. That being said, I have a Spikes lower with a BCM upper. There is a small amount of play, barely noticeable and I used an accu-wedge to help tighten it up. So that is always an option as well. I don't think you should be very concerned over it since Palmetto has developed a good rep and I would stick with another reputable company, like Spikes, for the lower. |

Generally, uppers and lowers fit together well. Despite the many brands, there are actually only a small handful of manufacturers. I've paired all sorts of parts from PSA/bushmaster/Anderson/spikes/Aero/ATI with minimal issue. Getting all the geometries to match up perfect usually only works with the same brand upper/lowers, but it can happen with the others.
Another thing worth noting: my first build was a bushmaster (upper and lower) and they fit together awesome; super tight, totally matched up, perfect. now, 10k rds later, it's quite wobbly and loose. The pins and receiver holes will inevitably loosen up and break in over time. Don't expect a perfect fit forever if you plan to use the weapon. |

Thanks for the input. How long of a handguard should I be looking for to place on a 16" barrel with a mid-length gas system, and A2 FSB? Mid-length gas systems are 9", right? So I should be looking for a 9" handguard? That kit should have come with proper mid-length handguards. Are you looking for a free float type rail system? Or something along those lines? That's a whole different game. |
